HOLY CROSS WINS FOOTBALL STATE TITLE
Another great day to be a proud Covingtonian. The Holy Cross Indians beat previously undefeated Glasgow 33 - 14 yesterday in Bowling Green to wins its first and Covington's first state football title. The River City News was the only media outlet in Latonia when the newly crowned champions arrived back on Church Street. For the interview with principal Clay Eifert and for lots of photos of the return, click the link below.
Return of the Champs: Holy Cross is Kentucky's Best

"To think that a small inner city school on a two-acre block with no football field of our own, can compete with schools that have all the resources, is really something." -Holy Cross principal Clay Eifert

IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE... DOWNTOWN COVINGTON...JUST LIKE THE ONE WE USED TO KNOW.
The Central Business District is making a concerted effort to bring shoppers back to Northern Kentucky's original outdoor shopping mall: Downtown Covington. With help from the City of Covington, Renaissance Covington, the Covington Business Council, and the Mainstrasse Village Association, our fair city is decking the halls this holiday season with shopping specials and beautiful decor. Today is particularly significant. Following last week's Small Business Saturday, which local retailers tell The River City News was a huge success, local merchants will celebrate this evening with a reception at the Avenue Lounge and a holiday decoration contest. The festivities begin at 5:00PM. For complete details, click here.

IS SIMS FURNITURE A SHOO-IN FOR THE TOP PRIZE?
Probably. The effort by Sims to recreate the old-school style of window displays from decades past is one that not only benefits their business, but the entire city. People are coming Downtown just to see it, and it really is breathtakingly spectacular. If you haven't been down there (Madison Avenue), go! But, for a preview, you can click the link below.

MIRACLE IN MAINSTRASSE VILLAGE
The Mainstrasse Village continues its reign among the best urban experiences in all of Greater Cincinnati this weekend. The Holmes High School band will be there to jingle-bell-rock the crowd starting at 1:00PM followed by a live performance of popular local band, The Turkeys. Parties for hosting, marshmallows for roasting, and caroling out in the snow! No, seriously, that Christmas song comes to life today in Mainstrasse. There will be marshmallows for roasting and this evening, you're the star with Christmas Karaoke at the Goose Girl Fountain. What are you waiting for? For complete details, click here.

CHIQUITA CEO TAKEN TO TASK BY CINCINNATI CLUB PROMOTER
Heuser @ Twitter
Aguirre @ Twitter
Have I mentioned how much I love Twitter? Where else would could I watch a conversation between Chiquita CEO Fernando Aguirre and Cincinnati club promoter (and my Tau Kappa Epsilon @ NKU fraternity brother) Josh Heuser go at it (gentlemanly, of course) in real time? Take a look at the transcript:

AGUIRREWho might be the #Chiquita 2011 #HeroOfTheGame ? Find out at #Redsfest 2morrow.

HEUSERur still hyping Cincy?

AGUIRRE:  @Reds & @redscommunity will always be on the priority list. #Chiquita #HeroOfTheGame = $20K for kids

HEUSER: let's not make it about kids. We know its about the airport or lack there.

AGUIRRE: 2 different things. #Chiquita and I will continue to support the @reds & @redscommunity The airport is an issue to most.

HEUSER: I hope the region realizes the airport is THE most Important issue our region

AGUIRRE: Me too. But complicated by political leaders thinking it's a KY problem.

HEUSER:  I enjoy following you and wish u the best. My frustration comes from "leaders" not seeing what's right in front of them.

AGUIRRE: Couldn't agree with u more. Particularly about some political leaders who only worry about reelection. Thx 4 following.

HEUSER: ur correct, hopefully our candid "tweets" shed light to others. More info than the paper reported

AGUIRRE: I wish I could shed more light but my Dad always said that U didn't need to dump on others to get ahead.

HEUSER: ur dad is a wise man. Thank you for the candid conversation and look forward to following u through the next chapter

PRETTY COOL, RIGHT?

DID JENI LEE DINKEL ASSAULT HER VICTIM'S MOM AT THE ARONOFF?
Apparently, for the latest run of Wicked at the Aronoff Center, the real drama wasn't on stage. Convicted child molester and former makeup executive Jeni Lee Dinkel, who had sex with a 15-year old boy, allegedly got into a fight with that boy's mother when they crossed paths around Thanksgiving during a performance. Anybody got any good Elphaba jokes?

MUSIC COMMUNITY FRETS OVER SOUTHGATE HOUSE
This really is a huge loss for the region, in case you didn't know:
"You can't replace that place," said Chris Schadler of Northside, the Southgate House's in-house promoter from 1995 to 2008. "A band can go anywhere and do a show and make that place cool, but the Southgate House was a step above that. That place is unique and everybody knows it."

NKY TEA PARTY PRESIDENT TO RUN FOR LEGISLATURE

THE RUMBLE IN RUPP: #1 KENTUCKY HOSTS NORTH CAROLINA
The game is at noon, so I have to wrap this up. UNC will be out for revenge following last year's loss to UK in the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament that sent Kentucky to the Final Four. This should be a great game.
UK head coach John Calipari previews the game in the Kentucky Kernel here.

RETURN OF THE CHAMPS: HOLY CROSS IS KENTUCKY'S BEST

The bus returns with the state
champions on board
The road to Bowling Green and the 2011 Kentucky State Football Class 2-A Championship trophy was fourteen years long for the Holy Cross Indians. A program that started in 1998 is now king in Kentucky in 2011. "Some of these kids didn't win a game in freshman football, and by the time they're seniors, they win the state championship," said Clay Eifert, principal of Holy Cross. "We teach our kids to overachieve and to believe anything is possible."
|
The trip to Western Kentucky University for the final game drew four-thousand Holy Cross students, fans, and alumni, Eifert said, more than were there for opposing Glasgow which is just thirty minutes away from Bowling Green. More importantly, there were more points on Holy Cross's side of the scoreboard when the final whistle blew: Indians 33, Glasgow 14. The Latonia Catholic school brings back its first state title and the first for any school in Covington, Northern Kentucky's final river city to be on top in Kentucky football.
|
Principal Clay Eifert await the bus
The revelry from the final game continued from WKU's L.T. Smith Stadium to Church Street in Latonia where roughly sixty people waited in freezing temperatures to welcome back their heros. "Holy Cross is a generational school and when we have an even tlike this it brings all the alumni together," Eifert said. "I think that's what's special about the school is everyone comes back." Eifert's time at Holy Cross started as a first-grader in 1969. Now, as principal, he looks forward to the rewards of Holy Cross's efforts on the football field.
|
"This helps us moving forward," he said. "We're the only Catholic school that's been at full capacity the past twelve years. We've got a storied athletic tradition: four regional titles in boys' basketball, state championships in softball and volleyball. But for a football team to win after only fourteen years, that's really an accomplishment." Eifert credits the teaching and coaching style of head coach and former Cincinnati Bengal Bruce Kozerski. "He takes kids and develops them over four years, teaches them to play together and teaches them to overachieve, and they believe anything is possible" Eifert said. "The patron saint of Holy Cross is Saint Jude, the patron saint of the impossible. The impossible happened at Holy Cross."
|
Holy Cross sits on Church street in an urban setting with no outdoor athletic facilities, adding to the sense of overcoming the impossible. The school plays its home games at Holmes, but it does have a practice field through an agreement with the City of Covington. After the 1997 flood destroyed Rosedale Park, Holy Cross agreed to redevelop it. The location is now Eva G. Farris Park and is home to practice fields, a soccer field and a running track. "To think that a small inner city school on a two-acre block with no football field of our own, can compete with schools that have all the resources, is really something," Eifert said.

REPORTS ARE COMING IN FROM BOWLING GREEN...
It's almost kickoff time (4PM Eastern) Western Kentucky University where the Holy Cross Indians seek their first (and Covington's first) state title against the undefeated Glasgow Scotties. FOX 19's Joe Danneman reports that Glasgow's fan section is much larger than Holy Cross's but that's because Glasgow is in the Bowling Green area. Here are links to Danneman's Twitter photos as the Indians warm up:

COVINGTON IS PROUD! GO INDIANS!

NEWS ROUND-UP -- FRIDAY MORNING

by Michael Monks

GO HOLY CROSS!
The Indians play today at 4:00PM (Eastern) in Bowling Green (which is in Central time). Covington is the only NKY River City without a state football title (CovCath is technically from Park Hills). If Holy Cross knocks off undefeated Glasgow, that changes. Holy Cross has only played football for 14 years -- this is a HUGE accomplishment and everyone in Covington should be proud of these kids.

MORE HOLIDAY CHEER FOR MADISON AVENUE
If you're shoppin' local this holiday season, Downtown Covington is looking better than it has in a long time. Please come down and support your local retailers -- that is how we rebuild the central business district! Here are photos of new ribbons and bows being placed around Downtown by the hard-working Public Improvement department. Thanks to the Covington Business Council, Renaissance Covington and US Bank for being the chief source of funding for the decorations!

Improvements
“This is an affordable way to create a more festive atmosphere for workers, shoppers and residents, and it creates an opportunity for further collaboration between the CBC, the City and local merchants," said Pat Frew, Executive Director of the Covington Business Council. "We’ve already started a dialogue with the city on sharing resources and distribution channels which could reduce cost for decorations in the future.”

COVINGTON FIREFIGHTERS COLLECTING COATS

From the Department: "St. Vincent De Paul has placed barrels in each of the Covington Firehouses again this year. Times are tough for many of our citizens, young and old, and this is a small way to give a helping hand. One coat can make all the difference to a person doing without this year. If you are cleaning out your closets and have a coat you are no longer going to wear, please put it in the barrel so someone can stay warm this winter. Questions? 859.431.0462."

SO WHAT IS THE FIRE DEPARTMENT GONNA DO WITH THAT TEN GRAND?
Because of the rallying of Covington's engaged citizens, the fire department won a $10,000 grant from Liberty Mutual's Be Fire Smart program. The City reports on a variety of options that the grant could be used for:
* Purchasing hardware that would allow us to produce and print onsite inspection reports;
* Adding to our fire extinguisher training program by purchasing needed equipment;
* Purchasing software upgrades that will allow us to upgrade our preplan site drawings;
* Purchasing additional public education materials;
* Looking into starting a business-friendly, self-inspection program for qualified occupancies.
SEE ALSO: Cincinnati CityBeat ranks Covington among the winners in this week's issue of Winners & Losers, all because we helped the fire department win the money:
COVINGTON: Thanks to local residents, the Covington Fire Department is getting a $10,000 grant from Liberty Mutual Insurance. That’s because enough residents took part in the company’s “Be Fire Smart” online quiz to learn about fire safety and prevention while also securing credit for their their fire department. More than 1,275 residents participated in the quiz, answering 10 questions to test their fire safety knowledge. Each person to complete the test scored a credit for the Fire Department, helping it become one of six mid-size communities, and one of 10 cities across the nation to win a Liberty Mutual grant. Assistant Chief Brian Bamberger said the money will be used to buy needed equipment. Besides the quiz, Liberty Mutual’s website includes fire safety tips, information on how to create a home fire escape plan and a room-by-room guide to preventing fire hazards. All of these are good to know, especially during the holiday season.

REMINDER: COVINGTON'S RIVERFRONT IS TOPIC OF PUBLIC MEETING
Be there. From the City:
The Ohio Riverfront is important to Covington's future development, and we have an opportunity to shape what it will look like! Our neighbor to the north, Cincinnati, is making significant improvements to its riverfront, for public use/public recreational space, as well as for private developments like The Majestic Show Boat, the Montgomery Inn & Boathouse and the under-construction Christian Moerlein Lager House. At this Community Input Session, we will share how other communities have improved their riverfronts, what Covington's riverfront currently looks like, and how possible improvements can be made along the Ohio Riverfront.
Meeting is Monday, December 5, 6:00PM at City Hall.

BLOW ON THOSE DICE -- CASINOS FOR KENTUCKY ARE BACK ON THE TABLE
Governor Beshear says he is open to it, and not only that, he's open to stand-alone casinos:
Speaking to reporters after the luncheon, the governor indicated that he could support either a legislative option or a constitutional amendment on gambling for the 2012 ballot.
"I think most folks out there are ready to vote on expanded gambling," Beshear said. "My preference is for passing something we can get a majority vote on. If that's legislation, I'm all for it. If that's a constitutional amendment, I'm all for it. I think it's a much easier vote to put on the ballot and let the people vote on it."
Let's hope that once this passes, Covington is on the list.

URBAN CINCY WRITER BLAMES CVG'S LOCATION FOR CHIQUITA LOSS

Interesting perspective:

The great frustration is that all of this could have been avoided if at the cusp of the jet age a major airport had been built in Butler County so as to draw from the combined 3-plus million population of Cincinnati and Dayton. Such an airport could have attracted all of the development that now occupies Boone County, Kentucky, and the larger combined population would have ensured multiple major carriers. Is a continued reliance on CVG a strategy that dooms Cincinnati’s potential? There is a temptation, given the billions invested in that facility over the past 60 years, to dismiss any notion of constructing a new airport in Ohio. But with no futuristic transportation mode on the horizon, it appears that jet travel will continue in a form similar to what exists now for decades to come.
I like what the writer has to say about rail and about how metro areas are at the mercy of these unstable, ridiculous airlines.

DIRECTION 2030 RELEASES SOME SURVEY RESULTS ON KENTON COUNTY
It appears that we may be just as lame as expected. According to the results, we're mostly middle-aged, lived in Kenton County for more than 10 years, half of us would never use alternative transportation (25% don't even think we need to improve alternative modes of tranportaion). Now I see why Direction 2030 is so hellbent on getting younger people to these meetings. One note for Covington: 70% rank a good school system as "very important" or "important" when choosing a place to live. Check out all the results at the link.

DIPPIN' DOTS TO GROCERY STORES?

The ice cream of the future is taking a more present-day route to solvency:
The company’s five researchers, whose mission is to invent the next generation of the already future-set beaded ice cream, are working hard to put the quirky and colorful dots on the grocery store shelves as early as next year. The enterprise could help lift sales and reenergize the dots’ novel concept that is quickly aging as a childhood memory for Millennials. The dots’ destiny toward the freezer section would send them boldly into an environment where they haven’t been able to survive in the past. The climate-picky dots start sticking to each other once their storage temperature begins to rise above negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
