So that means that you should do today what you should be doing everyday: patronizing small businesses in our communities. (Though I do find it odd that "Small Business Saturday" is a registered trademark of American Express. Remember, small merchants prefer cash!)

NEW SHOP FOR MEN TAKES ON BIG BOYS, OPENS ON BLACK FRIDAY

While Mall Road or Kenwood Avenue are obvious local destinations for Black Friday shopping thrill-seekers, Covington's Scott Boulevard may sooner-than-later join their ranks. On the busiest shopping day of the year, Flow, A Shop For Men boldly opened at 621 Scott Boulevard, an area in need of new retail. "I would like to rebrand Scott Boulevard as 'The Boulevard', with an eclectic mix of shops you can't find anywhere else," said owner Jerod Theobald, 29. "If I can get the ball rolling, creating some momentum, then I'll be happy."

Flow is combination high-end, hand-picked consignment and new pieces by independent designers. The location is in an old brewery building next to D'Amico's Tailor Shop, a longtime Covington staple. Theobald traveled to Chicago, New York City, and Nashville to stock his consignment shelves. The new items come from designers on both coasts, the Midwest, and Canada. "These are unique pieces you won't see at Macy's or Nordstrom," Theobald said.

Not only is Theobald bold enough to open during the worst economy in generations, but Flow also faces a Downtown Covington retail environment that is sparse. Its corner location on Scott sits directly across from the Mad Hatter music venue which will close Sunday night. The only lights shining in the neighborhood after sunset come from the Lee's Chicken. And now, from Flow. "I know it's cliche to say 'one block at a time'," Theobald said, "but I will focus on this block and how I can make it better." A growing library with a large construction project underway and the expansion plans for neighboring Gateway College are both indicators that Flow has opened in a neighborhood ripe for development. 
Hours: Tues - Sat 11:00AM - 7:00 PM, Sun 12:00PM - 6:00PM, Mon CLOSED. Prices for resale items range from $14 - $35 and new item prices range from $30 - $80.

LOUISVILLE BUSINESS BOYCOTTS BLACK FRIDAY
A guy who ran for Mayor of Kentucky's largest city last year kept his bike shop closed on Black Friday. Instead, he chose to recognize "Buy Nothing Day":

The annual event is an international day of protest against purchasing items on Black Friday, which marks the beginning of Christmas shopping season. Social justice activists supporting the demonstration have gained more attention this year due in part to the Occupy Wall Street movement.
