COVINGTON LAYS OUT PRECARIOUS FINANCIAL OUTLOOK
Potentially "unpopular decisions" are on the way as the City of Covington prepares for another round with its struggling budget. "We're getting pretty lean and the challenges that we face, we need to address them head-on," Mayor Scheper said. Full story at the link.

STATE OF THE UNION

SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL:
...the President delivered a campaign speech designed to please his liberal base. The President told the American people that he has a blueprint for the economy, but what he failed to mention is that we’ve been working off the President’s blueprint for three years. And what’s it gotten us: millions still looking for work, trillions in debt, and the first credit downgrade in U.S. history.

SEN. RAND PAUL:

What planet do those two guys live on? Apparently it's a planet found attractive by at least two NKY candidates vying for Congress:
|
STATE REP. ALECIA WEBB-EDGINGTON:
"President Obama continues to divide Americans with class warfare and partisan politics instead of working to unite the Congress and all Americans behind an agenda that would create jobs and get our economy moving again. Whether it is the failure to lead on the budget or the failure to lead on the economy, the President continues to disappoint. If elected to Congress I am committed to pushing a jobs agenda that will focus on getting government out of the way so the private sector can grow and create jobs."
What an embarrassing, uninspired statement from Webb-Edgington. Nothing but FOX talking points and no substance. Boone Co. Judge-Executive managed to be more embarrassing through a meltdown on Twitter:

No solutions offered by these candidates, only cheap talking points. The stakes are too high in 2012 for cheap talking points.

MEANWHILE, BACK IN FRANKFORT
Some Democrats are upset with Governor Beshear's revenue plan:
“The real courage legislators and the governor need to have is actually bring about meaningful tax reform. By meaningful, I mean new revenue,” Rollins said.

CONGRESSIONAL BOUNDARIES STILL UP IN THE AIR
It sure didn't take long for everyone in Frankfort to lose focus of what's important and instead, descend into the madness for which they're famous:

House Speaker Greg Stumbo said Tuesday that the House still was waiting for a counterproposal from the Senate and that he was getting concerned an agreement might not be reached by the Jan. 31 deadline. Sen. Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown, said there were no negotiations Tuesday and no plans to start negotiations again. Thayer is chairman of the Senate State and Local Government Committee and a point person on the negotiations between the Democratic-controlled House and the Republican-controlled Senate.

TANK ENDORSES URBAN CAMPUS FOR GATEWAY COLLEGE
Nice gesture:
The board of directors of the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) voted Jan. 11 to approve a resolution supporting the development of the proposed Gateway Community and Technical College Urban Campus in downtown Covington.
TANK cited the group’s mission to assist in the economic development of the Northern Kentucky Region and campus endorsement by other civic and community organizations as factors in its resolution to support the project.

TANK is one of a growing list of Northern Kentucky organizations to support developing a Gateway campus in the urban core. Others include the city of Covington, Kenton County Fiscal Court, Covington Business Council, Covington Independent Public Schools, Covington Neighborhood Collaborative, Eastside Neighborhood Association, Licking Riverside Neighborhood Association, Kenton County Public Library, Southbank Partners, and Vision 2015.

The Urban Campus project also has been ranked as a top education priority by the Northern Kentucky Consensus Committee for the 2012 legislative session.
Gateway contracts with TANK to provide free bus service to Gateway students on all TANK routes as well as a shuttle service that links the college’s campuses.
“We appreciate the resolution as an indication of our shared commitment to a strong regional economy and greater economic opportunity that access to postsecondary education provides,” said Ed Hughes, Gateway president/CEO.

11 DIE ON KENTUCKY ROADS LAST WEEK

WHY OLD BUILDINGS ARE THE MOST ENVIRONMENTAL
An adjustment to energy efficiency and Covington's old building stock is ahead of the game:
Retrofit an existing building to make it 30 percent more efficient, the study found, and it will essentially always remain a better bet for the environment than a new building built tomorrow with the same efficiencies. Take that new, more efficient building, though, and compare its life cycle to an average existing structure with no retrofitting, and it could still take up to 80 years for the new one to make up for the environmental impact of its initial construction.

UK BASKETBALL FANS ARE AWESOME
ESPN polled Americans online asking how confident they were in being able to identify the best college basketball team in the country. Nationally, it's a toss-up, with a majority not very confident in their ability to say who's best. ...With the exception of one state. Want to take a guess? Must-see map at the link.

Has there ever been any good news involving this man?

Two Kentucky men who say they were sexually assaulted by comedian Andy Dick at a West Virginia nightclub two years ago have filed a lawsuit against the comedian.
The 26-year-old from Ashland and the 35-year-old from Catlettsburg are also involved in a pending criminal case against Dick, their attorney said Tuesday. Dick's trial on two counts of felony first-degree sexual abuse is set for May 1 in Cabell County Circuit Court in Huntington.
