CARRAN, FRANK BIG WINNERS IN COVINGTON PRIMARY ELECTIONS
Covington City Commissioner Sherry Carran led from start to finish Tuesday night in the race for Covington Mayor against fellow City Commissioner Steve Casper and Monte Casino mom Dara McDowell. In fact, with nineteen of the twenty-eight precincts reporting Carran had more votes than Casper and McDowell combined. That changed as the night neared a close as the final results rolled in from South Covington when Casper closed the gap, ultimately coming within 199 votes and setting up a head-to-head contest that could be highly competitive in November.

City Commissioner Steve Frank scored more votes than any other Covington candidate on either ballot, tallying 1,546 in his bid for a second term. Two of the big surprises from Tuesday night was first-time candidate Michelle Williams who finished second in the commission primary with 1,219 votes and for city commissioner Mildred Rains who came in fourth with 1,047 votes despite little campaigning.
|
Another interesting result was that commission candidates Roger Hamilton and Neil Gilreath earned fewer votes that City Commissioner Shawn Masters and first-time candidate Matt Dressman, both of whom publicly withdrew from the race weeks ago. Hamilton had stated at an earlier candidates forum that he intended to fully launch his campaign over the summer knowing that he had time since no candidate would be eliminated in the primary due to Masters's and Dressman's withdrawal.
|
It's a long way to November and lots could change between now and then, especially with at least six candidates in striking position of one of the four seats. Remember, had the primary results from 2010 held in November, the current City Commission would be made up of Sherry Carran, Shawn Masters, Mildred Rains, and Ray Murphy.

IT'S MASSIE VS ADKINS IN RACE FOR CONGRESS
The most talked about race in Kentucky Tuesday night turned out to be a blowout for Lewis County Judge-Executive Thomas Massie who handily defeated Kenton County State Rep. Alecia Webb-Edgington and even more handily defeated Boone County Judge-Executive Gary Moore in the three-way primary for the GOP Congressional nomination (there were seven candidates total, but those three got the most attention).
|
On the Democratic side, Williamstown attorney Bill Adkins won the Party's primary over a Tea Party Republican who clearly entered the wrong primary.
|
The 4th District has not sent a Democrat to Washington since 2002 and Adkins has a big hill to climb, but according to an interview he did with cn|2 earlier this month, Massie is the candidate Adkins wanted to face. He called Massie "the most extreme".

  PRESIDENT OBAMA 58%, "UNCOMMITTED" 42%
Kentucky Democrats showed less than enthusiasm for the President, handing several county victories to "uncommitted". A similar situation unfolded in Arkansas last night as well:
Obama has had trouble this year in Democratic primaries in conservative states. When West Virginians headed to the polls earlier this month, nearly 43 percent of Democratic primary voters opted for Keith Judd, a convicted felon currently serving time in a Texas federal prison. Republicans seized on Obama losing a handful of counties in West Virginia, pointing to it as proof that even Democrats aren’t happy with the incumbent.
Primaries are more complicated in deeply conservative states, where social conservatives once dominated the Democratic Party and have slowly become Republicans over the past few decades. Democrats still hold a registration majority in Kentucky, although the state hasn’t voted to send one to the White House since Bill Clinton.

MALLORY BACKS COVINGTON ON CHANGES TO
       BRENT SPENCE BRIDGE PLAN
This may be the most significant support offered to Covington's desired changes to the Brent Spence Bridge project plans:
“I will not support a design for the new Brent Spence Bridge that has a negative impact on the City of Covington,” Mallory said in a news release. “The Brent Spence is one of the most important connectors in our entire region and that is why it is crucial that the design for the new bridge benefits all of the communities in our region.”
Mallory also supports Covington's notion that the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge should be more utilized in the planning. Details at the link.

WILL WORLD END BEFORE TAX TRIAL BEGINS IN COVINGTON?
The defendant appears to hope so:
Lawyer Robert Webb was in federal court on Monday making final preparations for his client’s trial on tax evasion charges that is set to begin June 4 in Covington. Prosecutors claim Ronald Weinland, 62, of Union, diverted money from his ministry, Church of God – Preparing for the Kingdom of God.
Weinland is convinced that Jesus Christ is to return on Sunday -- this Sunday -- but that lots of other things have to happen, too:
Weinland didn’t speak at the hearing, but he posted a message to followers : “As readers of this site know, May 27, 2012, is the time that I have stated as being the date Jesus Christ will return as King of kings over all government on this earth. For such an event to come to pass, the Trumpets of Revelation must all sound, the United States and dollar collapse, the ten nations of Europe arise to fulfill the final revival of the Holy Roman Empire, and Russia with China must unite against Europe.”
Brace yourselves, folks. Could be a busy string of days coming up.

Fire politicians, not firefighters
So in the wake of so many firefighters being put on the chopping block, I have questions that continue to loom in my thoughts. Why is it that the people responsible for maintaining the budget, making strategic purchases and forecasting income changes are not being held accountable? Why are the men and women out on the streets day and night being held accountable for decisions that they had nothing to do with?
