C+V=G: COVINGTON'S NEW MESSAGE
Courage + Vision = Growth is the new mantra at City Hall as mandated by an optimistic and determined Mayor Chuck Scheper at last Tuesday night's State of the City address. The clever, sharp branding was created free of charge by marketing giant Landor and its Covington-based leader, Mary Zalla. The message is now on display at City Hall:
STATE OF THE CITY

|
The biggest wrench thrown into the 2012 Covington races came from Alyssa Dara McDowell, a home-school advocate from Monte Casino, who filed her papers to run for Covington Mayor with just seconds left before the deadline passed. The move forces a primary between sitting Commissioners Steve Casper and Sherry Carran, who are also seeking the Mayor's job, and McDowell, who ran unsuccessfully for Kenton County Judge-Executive in 2010. McDowell has asked for some time before submitting to an interview, but at the link below you will find a quick preview profile of this last-minute candidate hoping to lead Covington.

LOCAL GOVERNMENTS STILL DRAG ON ECONOMIC RECOVERY
The struggles at the local level weigh down the encouraging employment numbers released Friday.
Local governments — mostly school districts — cut another 11,000 jobs last month. Total job losses at the state and local government levels have reached 668,000 since employment in this category peaked in August of 2008.

ORLANDO MAGIC CHILL IN COVINGTON
The Magic beat the Pacers last night in Indianapolis 85 - 81 and they will surely chalk up that victory to a relaxing stay in beautiful Covington, KY:
When the NBA schedule makers quickly reconstructed every schedule in the lockout-shortened season, they didn’t think through one important issue: Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. There was no hotel available to accommodate the Magic in Indy:
So instead, the Magic flew into Cincinnati and are staying just across the border in Covington, Kentucky.Vigilant Sports

IN THE NEWS...

NKY LOOKS TO LIMIT SMOKING FURTHER
There may be no more smoking in Covington's public housing or swimming pools:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month awarded the health department and city $26,950 to explore non-smoking policies in its housing-authority apartments and $4,000 more to expand smoke-free areas around three city pools and a water park. “We’re not evicting anybody who’s a smoker,” said Aaron Wolfe-Bertling, executive director for the Housing Authority of Covington, which has about 1,670 residents in 756 units. “But it will allow us I think to begin to offer non-smoking options to people, such as a non-smoking floor at Golden Towers or a totally non-smoking building in either City Heights or Latonia Terrace.”Cincinnati Enquirer/Mike Rutledge

KENTUCKY CONSIDERS RESTORING VOTING RIGHTS TO FELONS
Kentucky is one of only four states that permanently bans all felons from voting:
Republicans in Kentucky’s state Senate have killed HB 70 without a hearing for five years running. And supporters of the legislation, including the NAACP and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, say the reason is obvious: Most who have been convicted of felonies are poor, and many are black, and they would likely vote for Democrats.

SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL HAS A CAMPAIGN WAR CHEST FOR 2014
He'll need every cent:
That is the story behind the Kentucky Republican’s latest campaign finance reports, which show that his Senate re-election committee had $4.25 million at the end of 2011 and his leadership political action committee had $469,000, according to the latest report filed with the Federal Election Commission.Courier-Journal/James R. STATE SEN. THAYER IS THRILLED WITH HIMSELF
...And his effort to help the Home Builders Association build lower grade roads for us to drive on:
On Tuesday, the Senate passed Senate Bill 62, which lowers the percentage of signatures required to place the question of whether or not to disband the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission to the voters. I am proud to sponsor this bill. This measure will ensure voters of Kenton County will not be ignored and have the opportunity to voice their opinions of NKAPC.Thayer @ Facebook
