Duke crew works to restore power at 7th & Bakewell Streets |
A hawk swooped down toward a power line on Bakewell Street in an attempt to have fresh squirrel for lunch. It turned out to be the last day on this green Earth for both bird and rodent as the contact blew two fuses knocking out power to more than a hundred homes and killing the animals. Duke Energy workers responded to the scene quickly and were busy restoring power, though the dead hawk and squirrel will remain in the street's gutter until environmental representatives can investigate.

A witness looks at the dead hawk and dead squirrel |
Witnesses on the scene tell The River City News that the event sounded like an explosion or a gunshot. Diane Gamble, owner of Rosie's Tavern on Bakewell, was in her bar's basement when it all went down and found herself in the dark. Tenants from the apartments above the bar reported the same explosion, gunshot sound at the time of contact between animals and power line. Before Duke crews arrived on the scene a man walked up to the fried corpses and cut off the squirrel's tail.
