During the dedication of Covington Latin's first newly constructed building, the ceremony was interrupted by news that the Japanese had attacked a US Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Bishop sent everyone home to pray. Seventy years later, the Covington Latin family gathered again to dedicate its new addition and to rededicate that original building that never got the proper celebration that it merited.

The $9.2 million addition is both a landmark achievement in the school's history and a boon to Covington's Eastside neighborhood. "This is the future of our city," said Covington Mayor Chuck Scheper before proclaiming December 7, 2011 to be Covington Latin Day in the town. "Thank you for maintaining a presence in the urban core."

The new addition features three college-level classrooms & labs, a technology center, a multipurpose space (that can also be used as a theater), a new cafeteria, a physical education space, and the one piece not available to students: an elevator. "When I was a student here, students were forbidden from going through the front door until the day they graduated," said faculty member Dennis Whitehead speaking to the student body. "Now there is an elevator that you are forbidden to use. Maybe they will let you use it when you graduate!"
|
Joining Mayor Scheper at the ceremony was Covington City Commission Steve Frank, a 1972 graduate of Covington Latin. "Boy, are you kids getting spoiled," Frank said. "Our building was like something out of a Harry Potter novel. This new building makes me want to come back and take my Latin degree classes."
|
Headmaster Andrew Barczak whose parents also played instrumental roles in the history of the school, gave a rousing address to celebrate the dedication. "As we turn the next chapter of Latin school history, we must set an example not to rest on our laurels," he said. "This new building reminds us that we stand on the shoulders of giants. You have been given much, much is expected of you."

Diocese of Covington Bishop Roger Foys toured the school, blessing each room with holy water while the crowd of dignitaries and students waited in the new multi-purpose room. "Today we ask God's blessing on this center of seeking, learning, and teaching what is true," Foys said. "We ask that those entrusted with the education of young people in this school may teach their students how to join the the discoveries of human wisdom with the truth of the Gospel, so that they will be able to keep the true faith and live up to it in their lives."
