COVINGTON SAILOR LOST AT SEA TO BE REMEMBERED 68 YEARS LATER
Norb Lankheit was just 23 and engaged when he went down with the USS Rich, sunk by the Nazis during World War II. His now 93-year old fiancee and his family will finally have a memorial service for him:
Between the short visits and the censored letters she received, Barhorst said she has few memories of the time Lankheit served.
But she remembers clear as day when she learned her fiance was missing.
“It was a Sunday morning, and I was upstairs with my mother reading The Enquirer when the phone rang. It was Norb’s mother saying they’d just gotten word that he was missing,” she said.

CHILDREN'S INC NOW SERVES 3,500 LOCAL CHILDREN
Right here in Covington:
Children Inc. is known for this research-based, “whole child” approach to early childhood education, and using this method is just one of many ways the agency is working to keep a promise it made to local families when it was founded in 1977.
The Covington-based nonprofit marks its 35th anniversary this month. Children Inc. began with one small child care center for low-income families in downtown Covington.

SIXTH DISTRICT PRINCIPAL SELECTED FOR LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Bill Bradford, principal of Sixth District Elementary School, has been selected to attend the prestigious Leadership Institute for School Principals which was created and funded by the state’s business community through the Kentucky Chamber Foundation.

Bradford is one of 56 Kentucky school principals who will receive executive-level leadership training that begins this summer at the nationally recognized Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C. It will continue with two follow-up sessions in the fall and early next year at the Kentucky Chamber’s headquarters in Frankfort.

The Center for Creative Leadership is a top-ranked global provider of executive education founded in 1970 that established an education and nonprofit section in 1988. Many Kentucky corporations use the center to provide training for their executives. Elementary, middle and high school principals from across Kentucky representing both public and private schools applied for the institute.

Participants were selected by an advisory board made up of business leaders and school superintendents. The institute is being supported by generous donations from businesses across the state. The participating principals will attend at no cost to themselves. Tuition and hotel costs will be paid by the Kentucky Chamber Foundation.

HOME SERVICES COMPANY RAISES MONEY FOR EMPLOYEE'S NEW SMILE
Platinum Services, a full-service domestic services/home-cleaning company based in the river cities, hosted a fundraiser over the weekend so that one of its employees can have a new smile from a local dentist:
This program was started at the beginning of our business. It involves taking an individual to the dentist and fulfilling all their dental needs including but not limited to implants, crowns, and dentures. We hire unemployed local struggling people and give them a chance. We get to know them and their work ethic. After a few months we offer to make something positive happen that they have always needed. In the past seven years most needs have been basic needs like better nutrition, housing, shoes…. just about anything. In our core client base is a doctor’s office, Loveland Family Medicine and they have always taken care of basic healthcare needs for our employees. In the past three years we have developed a personal and professional relationship with what we consider the Tri-State’s best dentist Dr. Tran at West Chester family dentistry.

OPEN LETTER FOR KENTUCKY TOURISM
Kentucky's Secretary of the Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet pens an op-ed for Kentucky Forward:
I would like to invite you to travel in Kentucky. There is most likely someplace in the Bluegrass State you have thought about visiting and just never got around to. Or perhaps there is a place you visited years ago and always wanted to return. I urge you to take some time and travel in your own state this year.
