The results from the 2012 administration of the ACT to Kentucky juniors and seniors are in and across the Commonwealth there are improvements to report. Locally, however, Holmes continues to languish behind the rest of the state. Covington's lone public high school earned a composite score of 15.8, well below the state average of 19.0 (from a possible high score of 36). Out of 230 public high schools with results from 2012, Holmes ranks in a three-way tie for 225.

The school's score is a modest increase from its 15.6 composite score in 2011, its first increase since its five-year of 16.4 in 2008. Schools in all the other NKY river cities showed an increase in 2012 as well. Bellevue High School's average composite score was 18.1 (up from 17.6 in 2011), Dayton High School scored 18.0 (up from 16.5 in 2011), Newport High School average a 17.6 (up from 17.2 in 2011), while Ludlow High School averaged a 20.4 (up from 18.9 in 2011).
