A searchable database powered by the Lexington Herald-Leader details the high percentage of Kentucky students that qualify for free or reduced lunch at school:
Since 2008, the percentage of students getting free- or reduced-price lunches in Kentucky's public K-12 schools has grown, some by double digits. High schools have seen an increase of 31% in the number of students opting for free- or reduced-lunch prices.
Students can qualify for free school meals if their family income is at or below 130 percent of federal poverty level, or qualify for reduced-cost meals if income is at or below 185 percent of poverty level. Poverty level, recently adjusted by the federal government, is $22,350 a year for a family of four.
