WHAT COVINGTON WANTS
The Center City Action Plan, Covington's latest effort to revitalize its urban core, was explored more deeply during a visit by the plan's developers, Denver-based Progressive Urban Management Associates. PUMA returned to Covington for the fifth time but during this visit brought with them the results of an online survey that sought to determine the priorities of Covington's stakeholders as the effort toward revitalization intensifies.
The findings include the optimistic news that Covington already has a foundation upon which to build success Downtown. In an exclusive report, The River City News explores the survey's findings and offers a clearer picture of what Covington wants to see happen Downtown.

COVINGTON SEEKS TO WIN BACK JOBS
The Cincinnati Enquirer's Amanda VanBenschoten does a Q&A with Mayor Chuck Scheper in today's edition.

Q: WHAT SPECIFIC steps do you plan to take?
“We have to fix the systemic cost issues and challenges in order to balance the budget. There are a lot of incentives (in my plan) to get new businesses to relocate (to Covington), but we want to balance the budget without an anticipation of an increase in payroll tax revenue, and then use the revenue from new businesses to in a sense buy down the rate for existing businesses.”

HUNDREDS OF JOBS MAY BE ON THEIR WAY

The City of Covington's move to lower payroll taxes for the rest of the year may pay off with a big coup from Cincinnati:
“We’re most certainly aggressively marketing the opportunities in both Madison Place and RiverCenter, because of the most recent losses,” said Dan Tobertge, president and CEO of Northern Kentucky Tri-County Economic Development Corp. He declined to talk about dealings with Paycor. Covington officials also did not return calls for comment.
Hundreds of jobs are at stake and this would be a big win (and sweet revenge?) for Covington. Read the Enquirer exclusive at the link.

IN THE NEWS...

COLUMNIST: OPEN REDISTRICTING TO THE PEOPLE
After the debacle in Frankfort in which both parties showed their true motivations (to keep getting elected), prominent Kentucky political columnist Al Cross says the process should be up to the people:
If the legislature were to offer voters an amendment after this year’s fiasco, they might see it as self-serving and reject it. So it should also authorize a nonpartisan panel that would draw the lines, as is done in 13 states, and submit the bill to up-or-down votes without amendment. The panel could use online technology to let the public suggest district lines, as some states have done with success.
Great piece. Read it.

KY LAWMAKERS JOIN FIGHT AGAINST BETTER HEALTH CARE FOR ALL
Visionless, spineless, typical:

Nearly all of Kentucky's state-level Republican lawmakers have signed a legal brief in support of a lawsuit challenging President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

NKY AUTHOR RICK ROBINSON ON ELLEN, JC PENNY, & ANTI-GAY BIGOTRY
In a brilliant column for The Daily Caller, prolific local writer Rick Robinson takes on the religious right-wing's attacks on JC Penny after the company hired openly-gay TV personality Ellen Degeneres:
To be perfectly honest, Ellen and the folks at JCPenney should not feel all that special about being singled out. One Million Moms, and its parent group the American Family Association, also want Americans to stay away from Macy’s, quit watching the Disney Channel and boycott Home Depot. According to their websites, people should help bankrupt these businesses because they all “support the homosexual lifestyle.”
I shop at Home Depot nearly every weekend and I’ve yet to see the aisles decorated with mirrored dance balls or caught a single sales associate wearing a sequined nail apron. Maybe OMM is confused about the weekend circulars advertising that Home Depot has the best prices on wood.

TWO COVINGTON BUSINESSES PROFILED BY CINCINNATI MEDIA
The Cincinnati Enquirer takes a look at flow - a shop for men, which is located on Scott Boulevard:
Being married to a fashMANista, with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I had to check out the store in person and meet my new friend Jerod in real life! So, I just checked it out and Oh. My. Gosh. I am in love with this store.
 Me too.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati Magazine visits AmerAsia on Madison Avenue:

Chef Chu raises his empty glass one last time to the dining room. The two dozen or so customers (near capacity for the tiny restaurant, save a few open seats at the bar) reciprocate by lifting forks, chopsticks, even the distinctive, bulbous-bottomed beer glass encased in a wooden stand that holds Belgian Kwak beer in mutual appreciation. The chef and his assistant cook spin on their heels and exit stage right behind the curtain that separates the kitchen from the main room. After all, there are plates of sticky pork riblets, Buddha Delights, and Happy Family Reunions to attend to.
Really nice profile at the link.
