PARKING CHANGES COMING TO PIKE STREET AND POSSIBLY MAINSTRASSE

There will be more parking spaces on Pike and 7th Streets between Madison Avenue and Washington Street Downtown. A newer revelation during a public meeting about parking Wednesday night at City Hall is that Covington is weighing the possibility of adding meters to the commercial blocks of Mainstrasse. While the changes to Pike & 7th will happen in approximately the next thirty days, the Mainstrasse meters are part of the larger Center City Action Plan study of which more details will be learned in mid-March.

Meanwhile, a few business owners on Pike and 7th Streets have been voicing concerns for years about the limited parking options and the amount of tickets imposed on their customers. Currently there are eighteen metered spots, seven loading zones, and one handicap spot on the two blocks. The solution to be implemented by the City and AMPCO, the company that manages and enforces parking, is to remove all seven loading zones (with allowances for delivery trucks to double-park temporarily) , replace those loading zones with parking meters, and also improve the lighting in the arcade tunnel between the two blocks.
|
At least one business owner spoke in favor of replacing all the meters with two-hour parking signage but the local manager for AMPCO stressed that businesses in every city see an improvement when meters are used.

MORE ON THE PARKING STUDY PRESENTED AT WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S MEETING WILL COME LATER, INCLUDING HOW A NEARBY PARKING LOT COULD SAVE THE DAY IF ONLY COVINGTON AND CORPOREX COULD COME TO TERMS.
