KENTUCKY MAN GUILTY OF SENDING CHILD PORN DIRECTLY TO ATTY GEN
Woops. Looks like this guy was trying to make a political point by sending pornographic images of children directly to the office of Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway:
According to an affidavit in support of a Kentucky state search warrant by a DCI investigator, seven of the attached images included matter portraying children. Five of the images depicted adult pornography. The email contained the subject line, "Kentucky Freedom?" and the content was considered political rhetoric focusing on the "sovereignty of the Commonwealth of Kentucky."The man now faces up to five years in prison.

COVINGTON'S NEW DAYTIME CURFEW MAY HELP EDUCATION BUDGET
A new report indicates that truancy is a budget buster for schools in the Commonwealth:
An Administrative Office of the Courts survey compiled last year found that 56 percent of children ages 10 to 17 in Kentucky, or about 253,000, qualified as truant in 2010, meaning they had at least six unexcused absences. Truant children also tend to drop out, costing them as well as school systems, which receive state money based on attendance. Last year, Jefferson County Public Schools alone lost about $9 million from unexcused absences.Courier-Journal

REPORT URGES PRESIDENT TO CLOSE BOONE CO'S IMMIGRANT JAIL
Boone County's facility was highlighted along with two in Illinois:
According to the report, detainees at Boone County Jail said it was almost impossible to contact attorneys. One detainee said a doctor had told him that a growth on his neck required further testing and might be cancerous, but the detainee was repeatedly denied requests to see a doctor. PARTNERSHIP INVOLVING COVINGTON SCHOOLS LAUDED IN OP-ED
A DC-based education think-tank leader pens an editorial in the Cincinnati Enquirer about the Strive Partnership which includes the Cincinnati, Covington and Newport school districts:
But, unlike many other communities, Cincinnati has not burdened its schools with the sole responsibility for addressing the problem. “We’re all in it together,” said Greg Landsman, the executive director of the Strive Partnership of Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky. “In other communities, reform movements have fallen short when they get into the finger pointing and divisiveness that doesn’t net any improvement in terms of academic achievement for kids.” Four years ago when local leaders became aware that educational attainment in the area had fallen behind similar cities nationally, they responded by forming the partnership, which now, in addition to the local school districts, includes more than 300 civic groups, philanthropies, colleges, public agencies, nonprofits and businesses. The partnership’s overarching purpose, says Landsman, is to focus its collective resources on “creating the most robust talent pipeline in the country, focusing on the urban core.”Cincinnati Enquirer

FIREFIGHTER BATTLE GROWS MORE CONTENTIOUS IN LEXINGTON
The local union representing firefighters in Kentucky's second-largest city will move forward with plans to place protest signs on fire trucks despite the city's warning not to:
"I dare them to violate our First Amendment rights to speak out against a safety issue," said Chris Bartley, president of Lexington Professional Firefighters Local 526, a union representing about 500 firefighters. The signs — which read "Today, this Fire Truck will not be responding to your emergency. Want to know why? Call Mayor (Jim) Gray 258-3100" — are in response to a proposed plan to take pieces of equipment out of service temporarily, probably starting in the spring, to deal with staffing and budget shortages.Herald-Leader

11 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT REINDEER

5. Santa’s reindeer may or may not be female. Since reindeer shed their antlers at different points of the year based on their sex and age, we know that Santa’s reindeer probably aren’t older males, because older male reindeer lose their antlers in December and Christmas reindeer are always depicted with their horns. That means Santa’s sled either has to be pulled by young reindeer, constantly replaced as they start to age, or Santa’s reindeer are female. Do you want to imagine a rotating crop of sleigh pullers or an all-female lineup? It’s up to you.
