COVINGTON METHADONE CLINIC WINS APPROVAL FROM COURT
After the Covington Board of Adjustments ruled against allowing a for-profit methadone clinic to open in either South Covington's industrial area or in the Latonia Shopping Center, the matter landed in court. Covington lost. Now the clinic hopes to hope with the cooperation of the City. Don't bank on that yet. Click the link for the release from one of the two men hoping to open the clinic.

AN INTERVIEW WITH GATEWAY COLLEGE PRESIDENT ED HUGHES
Ed Hughes
The man spearheading the effort to bring the Gateway Urban Campus to reality in Downtown Covington has a terrific discussion in the "Northern Kentucky Podcast", produced by Strategic Advisers, the company co-owned by former Enquirer writer Pat Crowley and former Covington City Manager Jay Fossett. It's only a few minutes long, but a lot of important points are made. Click the link to have a listen.

BUNNING MAKES ENDORSEMENT IN RACE TO REPLACE STATE SEN WESTWOOD
Former US Senator Jim Bunning wants you to know whom he supports to represent most of Covington in the state Senate in Frankfort:
“I am pleased to endorse Chris McDaniel for the Kentucky State Senate,” Bunning said in a statement released by the McDaniel campaign. “His proven business leadership, military service and community involvement make him the ideal person for this position. Mary and I are delighted to support a true conservative to represent the people of the 23rd District.”
McDaniel, a businessman from Taylor Mill, faces two opponents in the GOP primary so far. The Democrats have yet to field a candidate. Surprise!

Also, Ben Dusing will not run for Congress. Both stories at the link.

NEW AG COMMISH TAKES LEAD IN PUSHING FOR HEMP LEGALIZATION
Wide-scale industrial hemp farming could mean big bucks and lots of jobs for the Commonwealth (so naturally, Kentucky has not allowed it because we've been too busy blowing up mountains and poisoning water). Enter Republican Agriculture Commissioner James Comer:
Comer is also supporting legislation that failed last year. It would allow wide-scale industrial hemp farming. If it passes, Comer has promised to work with Senator Rand Paul to obtain a federal waiver to allow hemp farming. Governor Steve Beshear says he does not support industrialized hemp farming based on objections from the law enforcement community, however, he says he’s open to talking with Comer and others about legalizing it.
(snip)
Comer dismisses one of the chief concerns about industrial hemp: that farmers will sneak marijuana into their fields. Comer says the two plants can easily be told apart, and, further, the cross pollination that would occur by mixing the crops would damage the value of the crops.
That awkward moment where this liberal is on the side of a Republican instead of the Democratic Governor. Sigh.

RIVER TRAILS MUST BE ALL THE RAGE
Because Louisville wants one too:
As envisioned by officials on both sides of the river, the trail would cross the Big Four Bridge and the K&I Bridge and run between them along the completed Riverwalk in Louisville on the Kentucky side and through Jeffersonville, Clarksville and New Albany along part of the seven-mile Ohio River Greenway in Indiana.
But apparently, these things cost money... so the project has slowed.

ROGER EBERT: MOVIE THEATERS ARE FADING AWAY
Strange, it seems as if a modern movie theater sells just two buckets of popcorn at full price that they would be able to make their rent payment. Apparently not:
3. The theater experience. Moviegoers above 30 are weary of noisy fanboys and girls. The annoyance of talkers has been joined by the plague of cell-phone users, whose bright screens are a distraction. Worse, some texting addicts get mad when told they can't use their cell phones. A theater is reportedly opening which will allow and even bless cell phone usage, although that may be an apocryphal story.
4. Refreshment prices. It's an open secret that the actual cost of soft drinks and popcorn is very low. To justify their inflated prices, theaters serve portions that are grotesquely oversized, and no longer offer what used to be a "small popcorn." Today's bucket of popcorn would feed a thoroughbred.
A thoroughbred. LOL. Giddy up! More at the link.

NEIGHBORHOOD KIND OF HOPING PANERA BREAD SHOWS UP AND PLOWS OVER CHARMING LOCAL BAKERY
LOL:
"Callahan's really is lovely and all, but every time I'm in there I get roped into a 10-minute conversation about what's going on in the neighborhood, or the history of some recipe that's been in their family for generations," said patron Catherine New, 33, who told reporters the friendly older couple who owns the shop is always there, apparently working from open to close every single day. "It would be such a relief to walk in somewhere and have some disinterested college-age kid take my order without even making eye contact."

"They're nice at Callahan's, but they don't seem to get that this is only a business transaction," New continued. "I just want a cup of coffee. We're not friends."
It's funny 'cause it's true.
