WHAT WILL THE NEW POPEYE'S CHICKEN IN MAINSTRASSE LOOK LIKE?
We'll soon know what the plans look like for the Popeye's Chicken that will be opening at the gateway to Mainstrasse Village in a location that has been lethal for every fast food joint that tried to open there. The consistent failures have been an anomaly as the corner of Fifth & Main Streets is one of the busiest in the region. The operators of the planned Popeye's will go before the Urban Design Review Board Monday afternoon.
|
REMEMBER: The space that Popeye's will likely soon fill was the target of an hilarious joke when someone manipulated the sign to read: Coming Soon - Aunt Norma's Bakery & Gunshop - We'll Clean Your Guns While You Eat. Read that story at the link below.

KY CAN KEEP CREDITING GOD FOR HOMELAND SECURITY
The Supreme Court will not hear a challenge to the wording of a law that thanks Almighty God for Kentucky's homeland security:
At issue were two related laws passed in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The first was a 2002 “legislative finding” saying the “safety and security of the commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God.”
The second was a 2006 act creating the state’s Office of Homeland Security and requiring its executive director to publicize “dependence on Almighty God” in agency training and educational materials and through a plaque at the entrance to its emergency operations center. The office has done so in years since.

COVINGTON GETS LENGTHY PROFILE IN LOUISVILLE PAPER
The Courier-Journal had a lengthy feature about Kentucky's newly designated Cultural Districts (Covington was named one of the five back in February) and our city got quite a mention, though it does focus on some of the failures of the efforts at establishing an Arts District:
But instead of unifying the group, Bowers said, she saw these meetings usually digress into “a who-is-funding-who discussion.” She also realized that funding that the city had thought would come to support the project dried up as the economy declined.
It seemed as though Florida’s ideas, which many pundits and economists have since widely criticized, had failed in Covington, as had the model the city was using, which Bowers described as a “top-down” approach.
But the city’s project didn’t die, in large part, Bowers said, because it became involved in a Kentucky Arts Council program that’s still in its infancy and designed help communities build arts districts that unify cultural organizations and help boost local economies. Bowers said the program has given arts and cultural groups a “common purpose” and strong motivation not only to keep its meetings focused but also to look at collaborating on a host of efforts to put the city’s arts and culture on strong footing as an economic driver in the city.

TORNADOES POSSIBLE ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH

|
TORNADOES, SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE TODAY
Friday is shaping up to be a potentially dangerous one:
The most dangerous tornado risk is expected to be from middle and eastern Tennessee north across Kentucky to the Ohio River this afternoon, where a few long-track destructive tornadoes will be possible along with damaging winds and large hail.
84 WHAS
|
Governor Beshear spoke with President Obama Thursday about the tornadoes that ripped through parts of Kentucky, and today Beshear warns us to be prepared:
“We experienced some significant damage in our state yesterday, but I must say on the whole, we were lucky. No one was killed in these storms in Kentucky. However, we’re closely monitoring the storm outlook for tomorrow, and it looks like we are in for another very strong line of severe weather,” said. Gov. Beshear. “I appreciate President Obama’s interest in the safety and security of our citizens, and we will work with our partners at the local level as well as the federal level to make sure our citizens get whatever help they need to recover from these storms.”

“I strongly encourage all our citizens to review their safety plan with their families tonight,” said Gov. Beshear. “Make sure your flashlights are working, you have access to a radio for safety updates, and that you have a safe place to wait out the storm. Planning is key to safety.”

SENATOR MCCONNELL'S LEADERSHIP POST IS THREATENED IN DC
Kentucky's senior Senator drew the ire of a conservative group this week that called for his resignation as Minority Leader after he said there would be no repeal vote on health care reform until after the November elections:
In response, the conservative Restore America's Voice Foundation said it would “unleash” its 2.3 million activists to call for McConnell's resignation if he didn't retract his comments. “Leader McConnell not only is an unapologetic advocate for the complete repeal of Obamacare, he authored the repeal amendment and forced a vote on it at the beginning of this Congress,” McConnell spokesman Don Stewart told The Hill after the Restore America's Voice Foundation said he should resign his leadership post if he doesn't have “the will or the backbone to force a floor vote” on repeal.

MARCH IS COLON CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Though, it is now being shared with Severe Weather Preparedness month (see above):
Kentucky's incidence of colon cancer is the second highest in the nation and more than 20 percent higher than the national average. Kentucky also has the third-highest colon and rectal cancer death rate in the United States.
“There is good news about this disease; it is highly preventable with screening,” Gov. Beshear said.
In his budget proposal that is before the General Assembly, Gov. Beshear is seeking to fund colon cancer screening for 4,000 uninsured Kentuckians. The $1 million investment is to be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Kentucky Cancer Foundation, for a total of $2 million to be spent over the biennium.
In honor of the month, you are asked to dress in blue today.

Good Monday morning! Welcome to your home for Covington news.

JUMP STARTING NEW BUSINESSES FOR NORTHERN KENTUCKY
The angel investor tax credit, on the agenda for consideration in Frankfort and sponsored by Covington State Rep. Arnold Simpson (D-Old Seminary Square), could make the Commonwealth more competitive:
Start-ups, especially those in high-tech industries, need a significant amount of money to help turn a business concept into reality. But it can be tough to bridge the gap between initial funding, which often comes from family and friends, and the stage where they’ve developed enough to attract substantial investment from venture capitalists. That’s where “angel investors” come in, investing tens of thousands of dollars at a time, usually in exchange for a stake or some other involvement in the company.
But it’s a high-risk venture, given that roughly half of all start-ups fail. Tax credits help offset that risk, officials say, which often stimulate more investment in technology and other emerging industries.
Read this.

GATEWAY COLLEGE RECRUITS MORE AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS
The Covington urban center for Gateway Community & Technical College held a recruitment fair Sunday for prospective African-American students at Ninth Street Baptist Church:
“Our congregation is pleased to participate as the host church,” said the Rev. Richard Fowler, pastor of the Ninth Street Baptist Church and vice chair of the Gateway board of directors. “The fair gives us an opportunity to reinforce to all students that a quality education is the best preparation to be able to find a good job.”

“Studies have shown that most of today’s jobs require at least an associate degree,” said Dr. Hughes. “We want all students to know that, yes, college is within their reach and that a college credential is what will lead them to a high-paying job in a career field that is currently in demand.”

“As vice chair of the Gateway board, I am particularly pleased to welcome the community to the college’s Urban Center, which continues to expand and make college more accessible to urban students,” Rev. Fowler added.

LEGISLATIVE REDISTRICTING MAY HIT KY SUPREME COURT THIS WEEK
This is not going away yet:
At the direction of General Assembly leaders, the Legislative Research Commission this week will file an appeal to overturn an injunction against the district maps lawmakers approved last month. In it’s filing, the LRC will also argue that the new districts should be in effect for this year’s elections.

CONGRESSIONAL REDISTRICTING IN KY DID NOT CHANGE POLITICS
Not very much anyway. In the 4th District:
This could be the most solidly Republican district in the state as a result of the new map. It picks up Shelby and part of Spencer County, as well as the Republican-leaning precincts in eastern Jefferson County while shedding Democratic counties of Fleming, Nicholas, Bath, Elliott Carter and parts of Boyd and Harrison.

The TV reporter credited with breaking the news about the Kenton County hooker-for-drugs scandal that will land Clermont County Republican Archie Wilson behind bars, lives in Covington:
Dave Culbreth, part of WXIX-TV’s news startup (1993-96), last week broke the stories about troubled former Clermont County commissioner Archie Wilson and Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga’s alleged downtown bar fight. Culbreth, 50, returned to TV last month after 16 years as a private investigator. “I worked for a whole bunch of lawyers. All the contacts I had over the years helps out,” he said. “I missed the news business and wanted to get back into it. I always enjoyed journalism and breaking stories.”

The horse industry's struggles spread beyond race tracks:
The park received only a flat fee of $500,000 for the equestrian games, but the state invested millions in construction of new facilities at the park, according to the report. Already hit by declining attendance from the recession, the park was closed to many regular visitors and events before and during the games in 2010.
