by Michael Monks
Find us on Facebook: The River City News @ Facebook
From the banks of the Ohio to the suburbs of South Covington and the central city in between, our own version of "Carmageddon" is brewing in Covington. Take a look at the list below and make alternate arrangements for your daily commute:
|
Highway Ave./KY-8
On Monday, Botany Hills's and Ludlow's main artery into the city will be down to just one lane for an entire month when contractors will begin repairing the floodwall closure seal located between Western Ave. and Wright Street. Traffic will be controlled by a temporary signal. Anticipated completion date is November 15, 2011. Motorists should expect to see delays and should consider using alternative routes during construction.

Pike Street Entrance to I-75 Still Closed
This one caused some serious traffic to backup on Main Street Saturday. Fortunately it will reopen at 5AM on Monday. But the following information still applies through Sunday up until that time on Monday:
  • North I-75: Traffic will encounter lane closures between the Dixie Highway (Exit 188) and the Brent Spence Bridge.
  • Beginning Monday through Thursday, traffic may encounter nightly lane closures from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning between Dixie Highway (Exit 187) and the Brent Spence Bridge.
  • South I-75: Exit ramp to 5th Street in Covington remains closed Sunday.
  • Traffic will encounter lane closures between the Brent Spence Bridge and the Dixie Highway (Exit 188) until 5AM Monday.

12th Street/MLK Blvd (KY 1120)
Construction continues on 12th Street. Construction activities will take place between the NB I-75 off ramp and Scott Blvd. The north side of Russell Street is now open to traffic. The north side of Banklick Street will be closed at the intersection of 12th Street/MLK Blvd. Access to and from the north side of Banklick Street will be provided via Holman Street. Watch for traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway. The speed limit throughout the work-zone will be 20 MPH. The intersections of 12th and Main, 12th and Lee, and 12th and Holman will no longer be signalized. The intersections will instead become a 4-Way stop using "Stop Signs".

Taylor Mill Road/KY 16
Of interest to commuters from South Covington, there are two issues surfacing around Taylor Mill Road including its access to Interstate 275.
  • Construction is beginning on Taylor Mill Road (KY 16) between Sunbrite Drive and Kleete Road. All traffic patterns will remain in their current location at this time. The speed limit throughout the project will be reduced to 30 MPH. Please watch for flaggers and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway. A signed detoured is in place for the Oak Ridge Baptist Church to use Clubhouse Drive.
  • The KY 9 entrance ramp to I-275 east is closed while work is being performed on I-275 east just east of the bridge over KY 9. This ramp will be closed until the end of October. The detour will be westbound on I-275 to KY 16 (exit 79) and back onto I-275 east.
  • The KY 16 (Taylor Mill Road) northbound entrance ramp to I-275 west will be closed Saturday, October 22nd, beginning at 6:00 AM until 6:00 PM. Motorists should plan to use an alternate route to access the interstate. Suggested detour is I-275 east to KY 9 (Exit 77) and re-enter to I-275 west to KY 16 (Exit 79).

Also of note:
Traffic will be restricted to two lanes on I-275 EB from KY 9 to the Combs Hehl Bridge. The lane restriction will remain in place until further notice. Traffic on the I-471 SB interchange ramp to I-275 EB will be restricted to one lane until further notice. Motorists should use caution and watch for changing traffic patterns on the ramp beginning the week of October 17th. Nightly double lane closures are also possible from 10:00 PM until 6:00 AM on I-275 EB and WB. In addition single lane closures are possible on I-275 WB on a daily basis after 9:00 AM. Use caution when entering the work zone and watch for slowed traffic. Watch for trucks entering and leaving the roadway. Speed limit reduced to 55 mph.
