THIRD CANDIDATE FOR COVINGTON MAYOR RESPONDS TO
CRITICISM OF HER POSITION ON GAY ISSUES
Her name is Dara McDowell and she wants to be Mayor of Covington, campaigning on issues of morality and promoting tourism. The River City News talked with McDowell Thursday and the report generated a firestorm of comments on Facebook. Read the original report:
|
Since the interview was published, McDowell has responded on Facebook to some of the criticism of her positions that arose, noting that she in fact "used to be gay":

Man with a man is a sin. So is woman with woman. But so is lying and gossiping... and calling your brother a "fool". Everybody sins. I'm a sinner. I used to be gay. I used to have illicit sex (any sex outside of marriage). I'm sure you did too. I used to take drugs. Perhaps you did the same. I'm sure I sinned as soon as a put my feet to floor, today. But when we tell children that it's "good" to sin... that's where we are asking God to bring judgement, I think. I absolutely LOVE gay people, gay people are my favorite people to hang out with. I can list the reasons why, but I'll save it for later. I totally accept you where you are... as I would like you to accept me. I just fear that if we PROMOTE homosexuality as a good thing, such as the lewd sexual behaviors that we have ALL seen in those ridiculous gay pride parades and march it all in front of children and loudly proclaim "this is a good thing!" - I think we are just asking for trouble, not just in the form of judgement from God, but in the form of a confused generation. And I just don't want to sit here watch it happen. The reason that you are so angry with me is because you are actually angry with yourselves. You know this is wrong. There is something wrong about it. But because you have been indoctrinated and brain washed into thinking it's okay, you doubt your own heart... and thus you are inwardly angry... It's okay. I've been there. I used to be gay and I HATED people like me... then. But like it or not, I'm here to offer a choice, and perhaps, maybe preferably, a wake up call.

SOME ANSWERS MAY BE COMING FOR THIS HOUSE
Why is this historic home wrapped in caution tape so haphazardly? The image created a lengthy thread of comments at Facebook where new information was gleaned by Covington City Commissioner Steve Casper:

There will be a hearing on Wednesday held by code enforcement board. Owner was served with violation related to the excess tape as a violation of sign ordinance. Much of what has been written of it's history is true, owners have split further complicating the issues. The hearing is open to public, who can make comments, if they choose. If owners do not appear they may be subject to a $10,000 lien altho sadly that won't cure the appearance that troubles us.

ONE POOL CLOSED FOR GOOD, ONE IS RESCUED BY HOUSING AUTHORITY, AND ANOTHER'S DEMISE IS IMMINENT
Covington's pool season is just weeks away and the past few days have been filled with news about the city's pools. Senator Gus Sheehan Pool in Botany Hills will close for good and be demolished, having outlived its expected shelf life. Read about that story at the link:

HOUSING AUTHORITY RESCUES RANDOLPH PARK POOL
The River City News learned last week that Randolph Park Pool in the city's Eastside would likely not have opened this summer. However, the Housing Authority of Covington has generously donated $50,000 to improve the facility so that it can open. Originally, HAC attempted to include strings attached to that donation which would have allowed the Authority to take the lead on developing Randolph Park and the former Lincoln-Grant School. MEANWHILE, GOEBEL PARK POOL IN MAINSTRASSE WILL OPEN AS PLANNED
Even though it, too, is beyond its expected shelf life, Goebel Pool is saved by its longer-lasting aluminum lining (the others are lined with concrete). While studying the effects of the proposed Brent Spence Bridge project, the City learned that replacing Goebel Pool would cost roughly $1 million. Until that happens, another year of stretching its life continues this season.

      COV CAN BUILD A BRIDGE
Or so we hope. Two public hearings this week on the Brent Spence Bridge project will weigh heavily on the future of Covington's role in the new bridge's design. City leaders encourage all citizens to attend one or both:
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has scheduled public meetings for the Brent Spence Bridge Project for Tuesday, April 24th at Longworth Hall and Wednesday, April 25th at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. Both meetings will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. KYTC, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), and their consultants will be presenting Alternative I as the preferred alignment to take forward into detailed design. While Alternative I is the better of the 2 remaining alternatives, City of Covington staff believes there is still room for improvements to be made. A summary of the City's concerns is listed below for reference.

If you are unable to attend the official meetings on the 24th & 25th, but would like to have your input considered, please convey your concerns by May 10 toStacee.hans@ky.gov. If you do not have email, please contact us and we will make sure to help you find a way to have your comments and concerns submitted as part of the public process.
