Covington School Board to meet
For the first time since the election filing fiasco that followed the resignation of Board Member Denise Varney, the Covington School Board will meet. So, if you are keeping score, here is how it has all played out (so far): Varney resigned, the public was told that the Kentucky Commissioner of Education would make an appointment, advertisements promoting the vacancy ran in the Cincinnati Enquirer as mandated by law, on the day of the filing deadline to run for three other school board seats (but not Varney's because she had two years left in her term) Mark Young attempted to file to run for Varney's seat but the County Clerk's office was unaware of any vacancy and so his request was denied, Young had an attorney threaten to sue the Clerk's office after citing a state statute that indicated an election to fill Varney's seat was likely necessary, the County Clerk added Young to the ballot as the sole candidate running for Varney's seat, a complaint was filed against Young's candidacy in Frankfort, Young's name was removed from the ballot on the grounds that the Commissioner of Education had not accepted Varney's resignation, Varney wants her seat back. Got it?

PRIMITIVE FIRE STARTING CLASS IN UNION
This could be useful as the end of the world nears:
Would you know what to do if you were lost in the woods, lighter is gone, with no matches and no modern tools handy to start a fire?

This scenario can happen as outdoors enthusiasts take to the woods to go hiking, camping, fishing and hunting in areas that are not familiar.

Now you can be prepared. Big Bone Lick State Park, in Union, will offer a primitive fire-starting class Aug. 25, as part of its “Lick the Wild” series.

Fire is important for protection, purifying water, warmth, and also for a mental boost during an outdoor survival situation. Being prepared for unforeseen hazards can mean the difference between life and death. During this class, the instructor will teach participants the materials and technique needed to create a fire using a few simple items that can be found in nature.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is $30 per person. To register or for more information, contact Todd Young at (859)384-3522 or email him at todd.young@ky.gov

US 25 Yard Sale
From the organizer:
Since most of my family, neighbors and friends already know, I (Judy Wigginton) am now retired. I had an idea to help entice travelers on I-75 to take an exit and help small towns get some much-needed revenue. Many of you are familiar with the 127 Yard Sale, some of you may not be, but it is a big deal in several states. My idea is a US 25 YARD SALE.
I recently approached the Williamstown, KY city council. They have endorsed the idea and given me an office to work from to make contacts. US 25 (Dixie Highway) goes from Michigan to Florida. I am concentrating on Kentucky this year and planning on expanding it to Tennessee and Ohio next year if I can contact each city on that route by next year's date. My ultimate goal is to have it expand to involve Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida.
Our plan is to have an annual event on the 3rd week-end of August. This year's 4 day event date is Aug. 16-19th. I have already contacted every city in Kentucky on US 25 and am planning on visiting those cities within the next few weeks to encourage them to help promote it. We want as much participation as possible for this first year.
If you live on US 25 or own property on that route, you have an opportunity to use your property to make extra money....for your own yard sale or to rent your spaces to vendors. One property owner of farmland near Owenton, KY has rented his field every year to vendors....he has even rented a portable potty for his vendors and shoppers. So don't let living in the country keep you from renting your spaces and from participating.
This is an opportunity for schools, churches, non-profit organizations, businesses, and individuals to make extra money. Please help me promote it by talking about it to your friends and neighbors. I have been in contact with my friend, Clyde Gray, from WCPO in Cincinnati....he thinks it is a great idea, so we are going forward and looking ahead to August 16 through August 19.

NATION ASKS PERMISSION TO STOP WATCHING OLYMPICS
LOL:
"We have dutifully watched segments of the XXIX Olympiad for at least two hours a day for nearly two consecutive weeks, including aquatic events, track and field, and even stupid stuff such as synchronized diving, and while we fully and openly admit that we have enjoyed far more than we had initially expected, we must reiterate—it has been two weeks," the appeal drafted by the U.S. populace read in part.

Covington City Commission Meeting
Whether or not food trucks will be given the green light to operate in Covington is one of many items on Tuesday night's agenda for the Covington City Commission meeting. Eight days ago the mobile food vendors were given a celebrated trial run during an event called the Food Truck Invasion. Held at the parking lot adjacent to the Artisan Enterprise Center on West Seventh Street Downtown, the event was met with great fanfare by those who attended and some vocal opposition from those who did not (See The River City News editorial on the issue: Food Fight: Shut The Truck Up). The issue will be taken up as part of several zoning ordinances on the agenda. Here is a breakdown of what's on Tuesday's schedule:
  • Zoning Issues The City Commission will vote on the issues of allowing food trucks to operate inside the City, allowing community gardens in residential areas, permitting fences to be installed around vacant properties, permitting the operation of micro-distilleries, allowing retail operations in residential neighborhoods with certain conditions, and approving the operation of second-hand and vintage clothing stores in the central business district.
  • Another retirement from the Fire Department Battalion Chief Ronald Stolz will be the seventh member of the fire department to retire in the past two weeks. Additionally, the city commission will approve the salary for acting Fire Chief Dan Mathew.
  • Employment is expected to be approved for a new assistant city solicitor
  • There is a vague item titled "settlement agreement" with no further explanation
  • The City and Covington Independent Public Schools will co-present on the success of the Summer Youth Program
Many other items will be discussed and you will find the most comprehensive coverage of Covington City Hall, as always, right here at The River City News.

What should Covington do with its code enforcement and community development departments?
From the City of Covington:
The Community Development and Code Enforcement departments will be discussed at 6:00 pm on Thursday, August 9, 2012. The hearings will be at the Commission Chamber on the first floor of City Hall, 638 Madison Avenue. "We want to be open and transparent," said City Manager Larry Klein. "We want to hear what citizens have to say. We, like most local governments across the nation, are trying to manage limited resources while moving our community forward. Our ultimate goal is a better City of Covington. It can be done."
Previously, the City Commission hosted a public forum on what to do about possible changes to the police and fire departments. For that story, click the link below.
