In an effort to identify needs and priorities, the City of Covington and the NKY Home Consortium will have a public hearing tonight at 6:00PM inside Commission Chambers at City Hall:
This Public Hearing is being held to assist the City of Covington and the Northern Kentucky HOME Consortium in the preparation of the Consolidated Plan and Annual Action Plan for housing and community development programs. EXECUTION DISCUSSION TONIGHT AT COVINGTON CHURCH
The September 2011 execution of convicted cop killer Troy Davis caused much debate as former witnesses retracted their stories. Davis always maintained his innocence. Tonight at 6:00PM at 9th Street Baptist Church in Covington in a presentation titled "Making Our Voices Heard", three academics will lead a discussion based upon their research in the case.

COVINGTON'S URBAN PARTNERSHIP FEATURED IN INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE
From the Covington Business Council and the Urban Partnership:
The Urban Partnership of Covington was saluted in an international trade industry publication dedicated to the revitalization of urban centers. IDAdvantage is the weekly online newsletter of the International Downtown Association, a champion forvital and livable cities that strives to inform, influence and inspire downtown leaders and advocates. The newsletter featured UP in its February 9th, 2012 online addition. IDA President & Chief Executive Officer David Downey CAE says UP deserves the recognition:

” IDA provides expertise and guidance to executives dealing with the myriad of issues their organizations face. But of equal value to our members is their ability to simply share best practices with peers. The membership spotlight provides that and we salute the city of Covington for its innovative efforts at creating a more livable environment in their downtown."
The Covington Business Council, which oversees the Urban Partnership, has also added two new members to its Board of Directors for 3-year terms: Mark Calitri, sales director at the Holiday Inn Riverfront, and Bob Berendsen, owner of Berendsen & Associates.

GAMBLING FAILURE STRENGTHENS IS SUPPORTERS, SAYS GOV. BESHEAR
That's one way to cope:
“I think if anything it strengthens the coalition because they’ve become more determined to get the job done,” he says.

“We now have been able to do that, we know who’s for it, who’s against it and I think we also know the votes we can work on and so actually this was a step forward. This is a good omen,” he says.

PRESIDENT TELLS GOVERNORS TO STOP CUTTING EDUCATION FUNDING
The nation's governor met with the President and got a little bit of a tongue-lashin':
"Nothing more clearly signals what you value as a state as the decisions you make about where to invest," Obama told the governors, according to a statement. "Budgets are about choices, so today I'm calling on you to choose to invest more in teachers, invest more in education, and invest more in our children and their future."

EX-KENTON JUDGE-EXEC MURGATROY GETS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
From Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at NKU:
The Eta Rho Chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Northern Kentucky University presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Dick Murgatroyd last Friday during the Founder's Day celebration of the chapter's 40th anniversary.
Murgatroyd initiated into the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity over 50 years ago while attending The Ohio State University and has devoted his time back to the Eta Rho Chapter ever since he helped the colonization in 1972.

Matt Bodner, current president of the Eta Rho chapter, said he was thrilled to present the award to someone he considers a personal role model and mentor. "Dick Murgatroyd is someone that everyone can look up to," Bodner said. "Dick exemplifies what it means to be a true Pike and has been a great influence on all of our members, both in terms of our personal lives and professional careers."

OCCUPY LOUISVILLE TO PROTEST AT CARDINALS BASKETBALL GAME
And Coach Rick Pitino is not thrilled with the idea:
Chris Harrell, an attorney for the protest movement, told Occupy members during their bi-weekly organizational meeting Tuesday night that police officials have offered them a designated area on the main plaza, just outside the arena’s front entrance, to stand and protest when the protesters rally from 4-7 p.m.
(snip)
“I don’t think that from a political standpoint … that a college basketball game is where you should demonstrate anything,” Pitino said. “It just doesn’t make any sense. (But) I respect all people and everybody’s right to do whatever they want to do, as long as it’s civil.”

TOBACCO FARMERS CONCERNED ABOUT PACIFIC TRADE DEAL
This would be bad for Kentucky's crop:

Southern tobacco farmers fear that they could lose a significant portion of their export business if health advocates win a battle to carve tobacco out of a major trade agreement that's being negotiated with eight countries on the Pacific Rim.

BEWARE THE GREEN DOT MONEY SCAM
Instead of using Western-Union, crooks have moved on to the pre-paid green dot cards:
"The suspects are taking advantage usually of elderly people and convincing them that they are winning the lottery. They are winning a brand new Mercedes and they're gonna deliver that Mercedes, but what they need to do first is to go specifically go to a store and purchase this certain amount of Green Dot money card and then give them that number," says Lexington Police Sergeant Jody Stowers.

DIPPIN DOTS USED TO BE PROUD OF BEING FROZEN
But that was before the "frozen" referred to its credit:
The company is running out of money because the bank that had been its main source of funding is refusing to loan Dippin' Dots more money until CEO Curt Jones is ousted. Alabama-based Regions Bank says it wants a judge to appoint a third-party trustee to run the company instead of Jones.

JANE BESHEAR DID NOT MAKE CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION SHE FOUGHT FOR
Bad PR alert:
In a 2011 news conference, Beshear said she was going to call her accountant to ensure that she had donated to the Breast Cancer Research and Education Trust Fund. But tax returns for the first lady and Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear show they have not checked the donation box for at least the last two years.
The Beshears’ 2010 tax returns showed they did check the box for at least a $2 donation to the Kentucky Democratic Party.
Diane L. Brumback, a breast cancer survivor from Boone County who participated in January’s news conference with Jane Beshear, said Monday that the first lady should stop touting the initiative “if she is not going to do as she says.”

BILL WOULD ADDRESS ALTERCATIONS IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM
Interesting:
Disputes can often travel from the streets to the hospital emergency rooms, putting ER staff at risk for assaults. That’s why nurses and law enforcement from around the state have pushed for a bill that would make it easier for police to arrest someone for assaulting someone in an emergency room.
State Sen. John Schickel, R-Union, introduced Senate Bill 58, which would allow police to arrest someone without a warrant on misdemeanor fourth-degree assault charges if the officer has probable cause to believe the assault has occurred.

WHAT? A KENTUCKY OFFICIAL VIOLATES ETHICS LAW? THE HELL YOU SAY!
You are not allowed to let a company with a state contract pay for your expenses if you are a state employee:

Kentucky Tourism Commissioner Mike Cooper allowed a state contractor to pay $735 for his meals, party tickets and other expenses in June during an unauthorized trip to London, England, in violation of state ethics laws, public records show.
Cooper's superiors at the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet instructed him to repay the money to the contractor, Gosh P.R., a British marketing firm that gets $179,900 a year to promote Kentucky tourism in the United Kingdom. Cooper helped award Gosh's contract in 2008 and signs off on its monthly billing.

KIDD-GILCHRIST MUST CONVICE CALIPARI HE SHOULD STAY
Shouldn't coaches at least act like these players are at school to learn?

"He has to come up with reasons why he's coming back to convince me," Calipari said Monday on a Southeastern Conference coaches' teleconference. "Here's why: What if he gets hurt, and I'm out there convincing him to come back?"
Calipari also noted the possibility of a player returning to college and then seeing his draft stock fall.
"It's hard to live with yourself," Calipari said, "unless you're trying to win five more games or 'How many games can I win before I retire?' "

ANY OF YOU LADIES, OR DUDES, COLOR YOUR HAIR AT HOME TO SAVE?
Producer Jodi comes clean to her stylist:

My secret shame is that I lie to myself. I have myself completely convinced that I can do just as good of a job as someone who has gone to school and is a licensed professional. To make the lie even more believable, I would buy haircolor from my local beauty supply warehouse, complete with gloves, a brush, and all the little accessories that would make one think that I truly knew what I was doing. Simply buying whatever was on sale at WalMart just isn’t professional, ya know?
I realized that my problem was real and severe when I ran into one of the stylists from Hair and Company at my local Sally’s, and I felt absolutely exposed, as if I’d been caught cheating on my boyfriend.

But when asked if it was the last best chance, (Kentucky Equine Education Project Executive Director Patrick Neely) said: “I don’t think so. There are two main issues that are not going to go away. The first is, Kentuckians are going to continue to spend hundreds of millions of dollars across the river. That’s not going to change. The second is our industry is going to remain in peril.”

As ordered by the Kentucky Supreme Court:
“Until the General Assembly passes redistricting legislation that complies with Section 33 of the Kentucky Constitution, the terms of the injunction entered by the Franklin Circuit Court remain in place,” the court said. That means, the court said, that district boundaries enacted in 2002 remain in place, and the filing deadline for candidates to run from those districts was Feb. 10.

Ugh:
“For example, a new home built in one neighborhood in 2004 was valued at $301,040, and had a peak value prior to 2006 of $309,100. This same home sold in the fall of 2011 for $265,000, a 14 percent loss in home value from its peak in 2006. Another home that peaked at $325,000 in 2006 was sold for $268,000 in December of 2011, a loss of 18 percent in home value. KENTUCKY BOURBON MAKERS FEAR CORPORATE TAX OVERHAUL
President Obama wants to remove a loophope that the whiskey makers enjoy:
The makers of Woodford Reserve, Jack Daniels and Evan Williams are worried about the elimination of an accounting method that allows companies to lower their tax burdens by boosting the costs associated with inventory held for a long period.
Obama’s Treasury Department sees the “last in, first out” (LIFO) accounting rule as a loophole. By eliminating it and other tax provisions, Obama would pay to lower the top corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 28 percent.

SEE ALSO: CNN cites KY Bourbon Trail as a classic American experience:
In 1964, the U.S. Congress decreed bourbon a “distinctive product of the United States,” and established rules that distillers must abide by in order to earn the privilege to label their whiskeys as such.

Bourbon is also the base of three of America’s most definitive cocktails: the old fashioned, mint julep and whiskey sour.

Anyone who likes a good drink should tour a distillery so that they can better appreciate the industrious care that goes into this distinct whiskey.
You can knock out six distilleries in two days by embarking on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, which covers Four Roses, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve.
