BABY SAVED BY COVINGTON OFFICER DOING FINE A YEAR LATER

THE RIVER CITY NEWS MORE COVINGTON NEWS THAN ANY OTHER SOURCE

|
Nearly a year after being saved by a Covington Police Officer, Jase Mitchell just celebrated his first birthday. Born prematurely, the then-four month-old baby stopped breathing last fall and Officer Matt Hugenberg was dispatched to Jase's home in Latonia. The officer determined that the child was not breathing and had no pulse so he commenced infant CPR and by the time the ambulance crew took baby Jase away, the baby was breathing on his own. For his heroism, Hugenberg was awarded the Northern Kentucky Police Chiefs Association Officer of the Year honors and was also recognized at City Hall.
|
Since the near tragedy, Jase has improved greatly and just celebrated his first birthday. Hugenberg also just celebrated a milestone: his eighteenth anniversary as a member of the Covington Police Department. Below, see photos of Jase from right after his birth to his recent birthday party.

(Many thanks to Kandy Hugenberg for the photos.)

ARREST MADE IN DEATH OF COVINGTON BOY

|

by Michael Monks
Marquita Burch
Cincinnati Police arrested Marquita Burch, the woman who reported 1-year old William Cunningham to be missing somewhere in the woods that surround City Heights in Covington. Burch, 26, recanted her original story when pressed by Covington Police who noted discrepancies in her tale. At that point Burch confessed to the police that the boy had died on Sheehan Avenue in Cincinnati and that she had moved the body to an apartment on Winton Road. Cincinnati Police officers entered the apartment and found the boy's body inside a hall closet. The body was examined by Hamilton County Coroner William Ralston, MD, before it was transported to the coroner's office.
|
Burch is charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. The homicide unit within the Cincinnati Police Department continues its investigation and asks anyone with further information to call 513.352.3542 or Crimestoppers at 513.352.3040 (or text CINTIP to CRIMES, or 274637).

William Cunningham
The massive search in Covington's City Heights for 1-year old William Cunningham who was reported by his family to be missing has ended in tragedy and police on both sides of the river confirm to The River City News that that the boy was found dead in Cincinnati and was likely never in Covington at all. Covington City Commissioner Steve Casper writes at The River City News Facebook page
Afraid very sad news, our investigators after a long evening and night were able to determine the child was never in Covington, all remaining releases will come from Cincinnati police, but what is known the body of the child has been located. Much appreciation to all our investigators for learning the real truth. I'm sure it hurts when the outcome is not positive.
Covington Police Assistant Chief Spike Jones confirmed that the boy is dead and that Cincinnati Police are now handling the investigation. A phone call to Cincinnati Police led to information that a press release should be forthcoming with more information but until then no further details are available. The River City News will have updates on this tragic story as they come in.
THIS STORY IS DEVELOPING.

A Covington tragedy worsens as a second teenage boy is arrested and charged with murder in the December 20 shooting death of Brett Thornberry, 18, at 1010 Greenup Street. Covington Police tell The River City News that a 16-year old boy was arrested on December 28 on the charges of murder and robbery. That news, which was just released today, follows the December 22 arrest of a 15-year old boy on charges of murder and complicity to robbery in the same case.
|
Police were called to 1010 Greenup Street in the 7 o'clock hour of December 20 after neighbors reported the sound of gunfire. Officers discovered Thornberry in the backyard, shot to death. The property is the same location of one of Covington's most gruesome murders in recent years in which Shawn Davis was lured to the address at the promise of sex before being robbed, beaten to death, transported to Campbell County, and burned.
|
The names of the teen boys charged in Thornberry's murder are being withheld as they are juveniles. Their names would be revealed if the case were to be transferred to adult court. Each is being held in the juvenile detention facility in Campbell County.

DIXIE HIGHWAY GETS 'OCCUPIED'
The organizers of Occupy NKY took their message to the Ft. Mitchell offices of Sen. Mitch McConnell Sunday:
“This is new, Northern Kentucky is now represented,” he said. “In a lot of ways we are growing and a lot is going underground.” Geffre said the choice of marching to McConnell’s office was deliberate.
“He’s the type of politician we need to get rid of,” he explained.

WOULD WE MISS THE BRENT SPENCE BRIDGE?
A former planning commissioner thinks the region would survive the loss:
What if we just say no? Blow up the Brent Spence. Or turn it into a 21st-century Ponte Vecchio, lined with tchotchke shops. Imagine a stumped-off I-75 that ends Downtown, relieved of the 40,000 smoke-spewing trucks that cross the Brent Spence each day and create a 10-mile-long parking lot too many days a year at rush hour. Turn I-75 from Evendale to the river into a less crowded parkway, without the need to widen every decade or so. Make interstate traffic go by way of I-275, giving Clermont County and Southeast Indiana a chance to share in all that soot and traffic.

BILL WOULD KEEP YOUNG KIDS OUT OF JUSTICE SYSTEM
Kentucky has a penchant for arresting kids under the age of 11. But then, Kentucky has a lot of jerk-face kids! One legislator suggests we need to stop incarcerating them:
In 2009 and 2010, complaints were filed against at least 748 Kentucky children younger than 11 for offenses that included being out of control, minor injury assaults and criminal mischief. Sixty-three of those children were ages 5, 6, and 7, according to a 2011 Herald-Leader analysis of state records. Eight of those children were 5 years old. State Rep. Darryl Owens, D-Louisville, last week introduced House Bill 143, which would prohibit children 10 or younger from being charged with criminal offenses. Instead, those children could be found neglected or dependent on the state for services.

...To create posters for missing kids, of course:
Kentucky State Police is looking for fifth grade artists to compete in the National Missing Children's Day poster contest sponsored by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in Washington, DC. KSP will select a nominee from Kentucky and forward it to DOJ, where one poster from all state nominated entries will be selected as a winner. The artist of the national winning poster will win a free trip to Washington, D.C and participate in the National Missing Children's Day Ceremony where they will receive an award and a U.S. Savings Bond.

MARY MIDDLETON LEAVES LEGACY OF SERVICE AND AFFECTION
From local author Rick Robinson in Northern Kentucky Magazine:
Mary’s death had us talking because she reminded us that people lead best by doing. Her involvement with the Salvation Army is legendary. Mary didn’t just ask people to go out and ring the red bell at Christmas. She went out and rang the damn bell. There was a buzz surrounding Mary Middleton’s death because we were suddenly faced with weighing the civic value of our own lives. We were faced with wondering if we had the same deeply rooted sense of charity and community. We were faced with wondering if we possess the same Golden Rule mentality that Mary Middleton lived daily. All good questions we should strive to answer by leading lives that matter.

SHOULDN'T EVERYTHING IKEA EVER MADE BE RECALLED?
Apparently there is something particularly shitty about the way IKEA's high chairs were constructed:
Home furnishings company IKEA North America Services of Conshohocken, Pa., is recalling 169,000 high chairs due to faulty safety strap buckles, regulators said.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the ANTILOP high chairs have restraining strap buckles that can fail, allowing a child to fall out of the chair.
Raise your hand if you've ever fallen out of an IKEA product? Wow... that's a lot of hands!

LOL...
Greeves continued: "Those whose homes are infested with the IKEA fittings are mostly young and newly financially independent. They're not careful with their new freedoms. In a spontaneous moment, a chrome Stalaktit seems like a sensible lighting solution. They don't stop to think, 'Hey, this could be something I'll have to live with for the rest of my 20s.'"
CIDC officials say they are unsure exactly how many U.S. rooms have been claimed by the furniture and décor line, but they fear that the number of homes in which one or more residents have been exposed to IKEA could increase as much as 80 percent by 2008.
"The chances of contact with the infectious brand are increasing rapidly, because very few areas of daily life are safe from the IKEA bug," Greeves said. "The existence of such seemingly innocuous items as IKEA tea lights, napkin rings, desk accessories, and beach-sports equipment dramatically increases the average person's chance of falling prey to IKEA consumption."

NEW DOMAIN NAMES COMING TO A LAPTOP NEAR YOU
The Wall Street Journal:
Jacob Malthouse is also developing a domain-registry start-up. He and two business partners say they plan to apply for dot-eco, a domain they hope will be attractive to companies and nonprofits with eco-friendly products or missions. "We get emails almost every day from people wanting to buy" a dot-eco domain name, says Mr. Malthouse. He and his partners began building the Vancouver, angel-backed start-up in 2007.
Mary Iqbal of Fitchburg, Wis., has a start-up dedicated to dot-bank and dot-secure. She thinks the domains will be attractive to financial institutions and large and midsize businesses seeking greater security on the Web, a service she says her domains would provide. "I'm obsessed with this opportunity," she says, adding that several thousand potential buyers have expressed interest in her addresses.
Getting the rights to be a domain registry doesn't guarantee success. A small number of these new dot-anything names may catch on, but it could take years. Many dot-something businesses will likely go bust.
Michael-dot-Monks is taken.

by Michael Monks
Find us on Facebook: The River City News @ Facebook
|
The 2011 Kids Count report from Kentucky Youth Advocates demonstrates a staggering decrease in the quality of life for young Kentuckians over the past ten years. The data undoubtedly reflects the fact that a 4.2 unemployment rate for Kentucky in 2000 reached 10.5 in 2010. The number of children receiving food stamps increased 68% while the amount of children on childcare subsidies nearly doubled. Sadly, the data is no better in Kenton County.
|
Here are some numbers followed by a link to the full report for your own reading:
|
KENTUCKY CHILDREN RECEIVING FOOD STAMPS
2000: 177,569
2008: 298,499
An increase of 68%
(20.7% of all federal income tax filers in KY applied for Earned Income Tax Credit)
|
EDUCATION
Kids receiving childcare subsidies:
2001: 41,779
2010: 74,121
|
High school averaged graduation rate increased 3.3 percentage points to 80.5% from 2007-08 to 2009-10.
|
TEEN PREGNANCY
In Kenton County, births to teen mothers aged 15 - 19:
1999-2001: 796
2007-2009: 737
The percent of teen mothers who gave birth for a second time while a teenager stayed the same in Kenton County at 22%.
|
INSURANCE
Kenton County children enrolled in the Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program (KCHIP) increased over the last decade.
2000: 774
2010: 1,513
|
Medicaid enrollment for children in Kenton County doubled.
2000: 6,701
2010: 12,455
|
Some other highlights from the findings: 28% of expectant mothers in Kenton County smoke while pregnant, 7% of babies in Kenton County are born with a low birth weight, 15% of 2 to 4-year olds in Kenton County that receive food stamps are obese.
|
The report does highlight some progress, including better access to dental care and more kids receiving health insurance. Check out the full report at the link:

TWO WAYS TO HELP NEEDY COVINGTON KIDS RIGHT NOW
First, The River City News learned Monday that John G. Carlisle School, the city's (and possibly the state's) poorest, lost its two major backers for Christmas gifts for the students. The district needs to raise (and quickly!) around $3,000 to provide gifts to kids who may not otherwise receive them.  Can Covingtonians raise the money to help these kids learn that there is good in the world? Checks can be made out to John G. Carlisle School and mailed or dropped off at the District office: 25 East 7th Street, Covington, KY 41011.

KENTUCKY AMONG WORST DRIVERS, OHIO AMONG BEST?
Kentucky ranked as 6th for worst drivers:
The report gathered information from the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration, the National Motorist's Association, and Governor's Highway Safety Administration on five key metrics: fatalities per million miles driven, number of moving violation tickets issued, drunken driving citations and convictions, number of tickets issued for failure to obey traffic signals, and ranking on careless driving.  Each state was ranked on each criteria, with 1 being the best and 50 being the worst.  Then each state had its rankings added to give it an overall score.
Is this a bad time to tell you that I'm blogging this while driving?

FROM THE REPORT:
We’ll leave it to Kentucky to tell us which is worse: driving drunk or driving carelessly. They’ve got enough experience dealing with both to make an informed decision: they ranked 42 and 48, respectively. That means they’re the seventh worst state for fatalities…and, not coincidentally, seventh on the list. Maybe if drivers within Kentucky stopped breaking DUI laws, the statistics would be lower!

PUBLIC MEETING IN COVINGTON ON FUTURE OF DALTON ST POST OFFICE
The plant at the post office may close:
The U.S. Postal Service is actually considering the closure of 250 such facilities nationwide for a savings of three billion dollars a year. The Postal Service says a dramatic decline in mail volume is to blame for the cuts.
The union representing local postal workers says the move to close the facility will not only mean job losses-it will lead to longer shipping times because mail dropped off in Cincinnati would be shipped to either Louisville, Indianapolis or Columbus for processing.
The meeting is at 7:00PM at the NKY Convention Center. Also:
Ironically, while officials discuss cuts at the Queensgate facility - there is also a job fair at that location today. The Cincinnati Post Office needs holiday help at its distribution center on Crescentville Road in Sharonville.  The job fair happens at its Dalton Street location today from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. You must be at least 18-years-old to apply.
