RIVER'S EDGE @ EASTSIDE POINT PUBLIC MEETING
The contractor charged with developing the new housing community that will replace Jacob Price welcomes your input this week. Atlanta-based IBG Construction Services is tasked with building 120 home units (112 multifamily units, 8 senior cottages) in eleven wood-frame buildings. PROPOSALS FOR COVINGTON'S NEGLECTED RIVERFRONT
Three ideas were submitted by two organizations this week hoping to land the tall task of regaining momentum on Covington's riverfront. Among the plans are a 28-story mixed-use tower, a dinner playhouse, and the ill-fated Waterfront floating restaurant. For details of the plans, click the link.

In today's Cincinnati Enquirer, Mike Rutledge offers more details:
Much of Covington’s existing development along the riverfront was created by Corporex during recent decades. But Corporex’s proposed $1 billion Ovation project, which is to be on prime riverfront land in Newport at the confluence of the Licking and Ohio rivers, has seen almost no progress thought Newport and Corporex officials optimistically predicted in late 2006 that construction could start in the spring of 2007.

COVINGTON COULD FACE $2.5 MILLION
DEFICIT NEXT YEAR
Last week's City Commission caucus meeting included an update on Mayor Chuck Scheper's 10-point plan for the City but also another warning about the dwindling finances in Covington:
"One of our first challenges is to find opportunities to reduce the expenditures base now," Covington finance director Bob Due said. "We'll be asking, what do you get for that investment (in line item reviews)? This is a process you don't get through overnight but it's one we have to begin."
In other news from the caucus meeting, an update on the daytime curfew and how many juveniles have been cited since it became law, and how Mainstrasse's Goebel Park may lose some land in the new Brent Spence Bridge Project. Click the link for the full story.

CITYBEAT'S BEST OF CINCINNATI IS CLUELESS ABOUT COVINGTON
Cincinnati's alternative weekly newspaper wraps up voting today for its annual Best of Cincinnati survey. Naturally, many Covington faces and places are among the nominees, but so are some outdated or inappropriate Covington people and establishments. Note to CityBeat: Butch Callery is no longer mayor, Holmes has had a new basketball coach for the past two seasons, and the Ascent is not an apartment community. More at the link.

CITY WINS BENCH BILLBOARD CASE
Covington hopes to remove those ubiquitous benches that advertise divorce attorneys and the likes from every corner.

ERIC DETERS CALLS FOR ARMED REVOLUTION AGAINST PRESIDENT
Not only has this NKY attorney/radio talk show host gone off the deep end with his calls for an armed revolution against President Obama, he's also cast racial overtones by calling for Attorney General Eric Holder to be strung up and saying that First Lady Michelle Obama is the black Marie Antoinette. Read the whole hot mess at the link.

THIS WEEK'S MUGSHOT ROUNDUP INCLUDES CHARITY RIP-OFF
Usually the mugshot round-up includes your run-of-the-mill drug traffickers and burglars, but this week an older woman appeared on the list accused of rigging a charitable game such as bingo.
Catch the whole list, including the story of a man whose high speed chase ended on foot at gunpoint in Goebel Park.

WHAT THE RECESSION HAS DONE TO MILLENIALS
Interesting read:
The circumstances surrounding the Millennial generation are particularly strange. Many came of age in the longest economic expansion of the 20th century and graduated into the worst recession since the 1930s. The abrupt contraction of opportunity has left a mark. Unemployment among 18- to 24-year-olds was 16% in 2011, twice as high as the national average. Median earnings fell more for the young than any other cohort, and college debt, most of which is held by 20-somethings, is at an all-time high.

MORE OPPOSITION TO PIKEVILLE'S ADMITTANCE TO STATE SYSTEM
Morehead State says no:
“We already have very limited resources and have had cuts to the budget time after time, and the governor has proposed more cuts,” said board Chairman John Merchant. “We just feel like this isn’t the right time to add another public university.”
Stumbo fired back in a statement Friday afternoon, accusing the board of failing to serve the people of Eastern Kentucky. “By making this type of decision without all of the facts, it only makes them look small and petty,” he said. “Kentuckians should see this for what it is: an attempt to block progress by a group of self-serving individuals.”

UK, LOUISVILLE, MURRAY STATE ALL BAG VICTORIES SATURDAY
Kentucky's three ranked men's basketball programs scored wins Saturday. Kentucky easily toppled the out-manned Rebels of Ole Miss, Louisville was taken to overtime in Chicago but pulled out a win over DePaul, and in the most high profile regular season game perhaps in the history of Murray State, the Racers had to problem holding off the visit Gaels of Saint Mary's. This is one great state for basketball... bring on March!

DERBY WINNER ANIMAL KINGDOM WINS FIRST START AS 4-YEAR OLD
Such a great horse.
A convincing victory in a $60,000 optional claiming allowance can hardly compare to his dominating triumph in the $2 million Kentucky Derby last year, but in many ways the stakes were just as high for Animal Kingdom, his trainer and his owner, Barry Irwin’s Team Valor International.
