OMNICARE EXEC GETS $1 MILLION SEVERANCE IN DEPARTURE
And yet, this is a company that cannot afford to pay its rent without your tax money:
The separation agreement provides Leo Finn with aggregate cash severance of $320,000, payable in 12 monthly installments, according to a filing that Covington-based Omnicare made with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Additionally, Finn will receive $502,609 in lieu of forfeited restricted stock, and $240,000 in lieu of his 2011 annual bonus.
Wow. I hope he can make it!

COLLEGE READINESS PROGRAM AT HOLMES HIGHLIGHTED BY STATE GROUP
The Kentucky School Board Association puts the spotlight on efforts at Holmes to better prepare students for post-secondary education:
“What we discovered was that a great number of our students didn’t believe they could be successful in a postsecondary program,” said Dennis Maines, principal of Covington’s Holmes High School. He said most students come from families where no one has ever attended college. “A lot of these kids will be the first ever to finish high school,” he said.

KY JUDGE MAY RULE MIDWEEK ON REDISTRICTING
And then maybe some work could get done?
Franklin County Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd listened to more than four hours of arguments in a hearing Monday. Shepherd had issued a temporary restraining order last week that pushed the filing deadline to the close of business on Tuesday. He said he may extend that restraining order if necessary.

SEE ALSO: You know it's strange days in Frankfort when the state senate's most liberal member joins Republicans in the state house fighting the issue of redistricting. Lexington's long-serving Senator Kathy Stein saw her district moved to northeastern Kentucky, leaving her without a seat -- and that has left many Lexington voters angry:
He appeared to take seriously the disenfranchisement of Fayette County voters who would have to wait six years to vote on their Senate representative, which of course is two years longer than the Constitution says we should. On top of that there’s the House Republicans who argue that Stumbo’s maps unnecessarily split counties and thus disenfranchise voters.

SEN. RAND PAUL TO SPEAK TO NKY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Check out the adoring invitation:
Senator Rand Paul, elected in November 2010 to his first term in the U. S. Senate, is the son of presidential hopeful U. S. Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas). Before being elected to the Senate, Paul was working as an ophthalmologist in Bowling Green, KY. However, when longtime Senator Jim Bunning retired, Paul felt compelled to run for elected office. His dedication to the cause of limited government not only resonated with the voters of Kentucky but catapulted him onto the national stage.
The event is February 24. Click the link for details.

KY AUDITOR WANTS TO SEE MEDICARE CLAIMS OF 3 FIRMS
Kentucky's new Auditor of Public Accounts, Adam Edelen, wants to know how well the state's Medicare claims are being paid and processed by the three firms hired to handle those tasks:
“Our office has received a flood of phone calls from patients who are concerned about slow or denied claims as well as from providers,” said Edelen spokeswoman Stephenie Steitzer.

KENTUCKY CONTINUES UNIFIED FIGHT AGAINST PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE
Governor Beshear & Attorney General Conway were flanked by legislators from both houses and parties today in Frankfort:
The leaders emphasized that in spite of a heavy legislative agenda, the issue of prescription drug abuse is a high priority. Gov. Beshear explained that the many efforts underway to fight the abuse of controlled substances should not be overlooked in this session. "Battling the scourge of prescription drug abuse requires dynamic, nimble policies and coordination of efforts, from law enforcement to recovery centers, from computer assisted investigations to citizen tipsters," said Gov. Beshear. "The legislation under consideration in the General Assembly will allow us to better coordinate our efforts for a safer Kentucky."

KENTUCKY'S SIGNATURE PRODUCT GETS BOOST FROM OVERSEAS
The international community is really enjoying some bourbon:
Spirits exports grew 16.5% last year, reaching a record $1.34 billion -- outpacing wine's $1.14 billion and dwarfing beer's $334 million, according to new data from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, a liquor trade group. Whiskey, including bourbon, accounts for 69% of spirits exports. The growth is fueled by lower tariffs, a weaker dollar that makes exports less expensive and growing middle classes in developing markets, according to the trade group.

Congressman John Yarmuth on the bourbon boom:
Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3), founder of the Congressional Bourbon Caucus, praised the economic contributions of Kentucky’s bourbon industry on Monday, after a new study revealed that the signature industry is in the midst of a worldwide resurgence that is centered in the Commonwealth.
The distilled spirits industry in Kentucky – which produces 95 percent of the world’s bourbon – has expanded more during the past three years than at any time since, according to the University of Louisville study. Bourbon contributes $1.8 billion a year to the state’s economy and employs nearly 9,000 people, directly and indirectly, with a total annual payroll of $413 million, the study revealed.
The industry has also created 4 percent new job growth since 2008.
“I’ve always been proud to support the bourbon industry, and this reaffirms the vital role that bourbon plays in our state,” Yarmuth said. “Far more than a drink of choice for those with discerning taste, bourbon is an economic driver and job-creator.”

Maybe that will shrink the lookie-loos flocking to the scene of the accident in Western Kentucky:

A ship is no longer sitting near the western Kentucky bridge that it crashed into. The Delta Mariner was freed this morning and moved to a safe harbor down river. Underwater debris had been holding it in place near the Eggner's Ferry Bridge.

CINCINNATI WAS ABUZZ WITH NATALIE PORTMAN SIGHTINGS
Then it was confirmed that the actress was in fact in town, as demonstrated by this photo from Orienal Wok, where Portman ate. Also, from the Enquirer:
Our best guess is that Portman was here to visit her grandmother, Bernice Stevens. Stevens, whom Portman mentioned during her best actress acceptance speech during the 2011 Golden Globes, lives in Hyde Park and is the widow of Art Stevens, the founder of Champion Windows.
And then this tweet from Busken Bakery:

L-R: Gomez, Dumond, Chaney
A rough week for Northern Kentucky music fans that included announcements that Mad Hatter and the Southgate House would close turned out to be good news for three guys, each named Andrew. Andy Dumond, Andrew Chaney, and Andrew Gomez had spent much time searching out a location in which they would open a music venue of their own. The trio, friends since their time as students at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, were in discussions to open at Newport on the Levee in the old Shadowbox Cabaret, but when that deal was weighed down by technical complications such as capacity issues, the Andrews went back to the drawing board, but knew they wanted to open Banagarang's in Northern Kentucky.
|
"Covington was gonna be lacking and we wanted to follow in the footsteps of the Mad Hatter," said Dumond. When the space became available, he and his partners pounced at the chance and have spent the last few weeks cleaning up the former mid-century Buick dealership and making it their own. "It's hard, but nothing capable people can't pull off."
|
Dumond and Chaney (who is leaving his job as a video editor at Channel 5), while only 25-years old, already have experience in running a business. Together they operate Riverfront Media, a video production company that includes Jungle Jim's among its list of clients. The connection to the international grocer will offer a benefit to Bangarang's: the guys want to serve food, and not just any food, but really great tacos and salsa made famous by Gomez who is already well known in the bar scene for his taco nights at Longworth's and Village Tavern. "We're gonna have the best food for a place like this," Dumond boasted. "We'll have top-shelf hand-crafted carnitas, hand tossed salsas." Gomez's love for Mexican food was inherited from his father who is from Brownsville, Texas near the Mexican border. "I grew up eating salsa before I ate ketchup," Gomez said. He even bought a food truck with the hopes of someday soon driving around town, serving his signature creations.
|
As for the music, the guys have followed the local music scene for years including stints in their own bands during high school. They have landed three bands and a DJ for tonight's soft opening and seven musical acts for the opening night bash on Saturday. Though they live across the river (Dumond in Symmes Township, Chaney in Mt. Lookout, and Gomez in Oakley), they are excited for the opportunity and grateful to the City of Covington. "Everyone in Covington has been amazing," Dumond said. He cites assistant city solicitor Alex Mattingly, zoning specialist Andrew Juengling, and fire chief Chuck Norris as examples of those on the City staff that have been helpful to their cause.
|
"Bangarang" was the battle cry of the Lost Boys in the 90s flick, Hook but Dumond, Chaney, and Gomez are not lost in Never Never Land. They have big hopes for their new venture and see it expanding someday. While no band has taken the stage yet, once you taste the salsa, you will know that these guys are in it to win it and are a welcome addition to Covington. Following the recent opening of flow - a shop for men across the street, Bangarang's will be second new business on the block in a span of two weeks, and with Gateway College's expansion looming, this neighborhood is on the verge of a renaissance.

HORSE SLAUGHTERHOUSES MAY RETURN
Gross:
Slaughter advocates say it’s a necessary alternative to paying thousands of dollars to care for aging horses — and more humane than letting horses languish abandoned or be mistreated when shipped to Canada and Mexico, where slaughter plants continue to operate. Opponents say that slaughter is inherently inhumane and that the congressional action will result in the reopening of U.S. slaughterhouses.

GOVERNOR'S SECOND INAUGURATION: NO MONEY, NO PROBLEM
When you're broke in Kentucky, you improvise:
Two themes running through the inaugural festivities on Tuesday when Gov. Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov.-elect Jerry Abramson are sworn in will be frugality and family-friendliness. "We're balancing economy with the fact that this is an historic day in Kentucky," said the inaugural's executive director, Bob Stewart, working on his eighth inauguration. Four years ago, when Beshear was elected the first time, his inaugural bash cost about $800,000. With cost-cutting measures in place this time, expenses are expected to be less than $400,000, Stewart said.

BESHEAR & WILLIAMS STILL AIN'T SPEAKIN'
They're still just so gosh-dern mad at each other:
It’s been on Williams’ desk that Beshear’s legislation has gone to die, quite often.
But following Beshear’s bruising 21-point victory over Williams in November’s election, Beshear may believe that he can bypass Williams and get things done by working with a coalition of Democrats and Republicans who saw the election as proof that voters are tired of divisive politics that have ground government to a halt in both Washington, D.C., and Frankfort.

KENTUCKY JAILS HIGH NUMBER OF YOUTHS
Truancy and other nonviolent offenses land Kentucky youths in jail at one of the highest rates in the country:
Those being locked up are youths such as 18-year-old Alan Hack, a student from Grayson County whose struggles with depression prompted him to miss so much school that he was brought up on truancy charges. Just a few days before graduation last June — while in school, taking a final exam — he was picked up by police, handcuffed and taken to a Hardin County juvenile detention center for failing to abide with a judge’s order not to miss more school. “It didn’t make any sense to me,” said Hack, now a freshman at Murray State University. “Here I was taking a final exam so I could finish my classes and graduate.”

KY LOTTO SALES ARE UP
Because everyone wants to be in the 1%! Or, maybe just the top 50%, since scratch-offs are the reason for the increase:
Howard Kline, the lottery's senior vice president of finance, said sales totaled $251.1 million, a $5.4 million increase from the previous year. The major factor was a nearly $4 million increase in the sale of scratch-off tickets, he said. At a board meeting in Louisville on Thursday, lottery directors heard a presentation on the previously announced transition of Powerball from a $1 to a $2 game, starting Jan. 15.
Soon, you'll have to win on a scratch-off to be able to afford a Powerball ticket!

BANGARANG: OLD MAD HATTER ALREADY FILLED!

by Michael Monks

|

The Mad Hatter's doors are barely closed, but already a new music venue is opening up inside. Welcome to Covington, Bangarang's:
Come out to Bangarang's (formerly Mad Hatter) and support us on Friday, Decemebr 16th & Saturday, December 17th for our Grand opening bash! We will have a lot of bands, food and drink specials and much much more!
The opening bash runs from 7:00PM to 2:00PM. More from Bangarang's:
Hey everyone! All of us here at Bangarang's would like to take a second to thank Frank and everyone involved over at the Mad Hatter who made the city of Covington a cornerstone of live music for the past several years...We hope to continue the tradition of great music, fun and entertainment that you all set before us...Through your passion and hard work, great live music now lives in Covington. We hope to see all of you old Mad Hatter fans, and look to gain some new friends along the way! Again, we wish Frank and all those involved with the Mad Hatter nothing but the best with all of their endeavors in the future! Hope to see you all soon!
So if it looks like the Southgate House could remain open and that the old Mad Hatter space is being filled by Bangarang's, and that Madison Theater s moving forward with its expansion, then perhaps we have nothing to worry about NKY's music scene. By the way, I love that Bangarang's has Covington in its official name. Welcome to town!
