The press release indicates that the owners plan to open somewhere else next year, but until then, music fans are reeling from the back-to-back losses of the Southgate House and Covington's Mad Hatter.

TWO WAYS TO HELP NEEDY COVINGTON KIDS RIGHT NOW
First, The River City News learned Monday that John G. Carlisle School, the city's (and possibly the state's) poorest, lost its two major backers for Christmas gifts for the students. The district needs to raise (and quickly!) around $3,000 to provide gifts to kids who may not otherwise receive them.  Can Covingtonians raise the money to help these kids learn that there is good in the world? Checks can be made out to John G. Carlisle School and mailed or dropped off at the District office: 25 East 7th Street, Covington, KY 41011.

KENTUCKY AMONG WORST DRIVERS, OHIO AMONG BEST?
Kentucky ranked as 6th for worst drivers:
The report gathered information from the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration, the National Motorist's Association, and Governor's Highway Safety Administration on five key metrics: fatalities per million miles driven, number of moving violation tickets issued, drunken driving citations and convictions, number of tickets issued for failure to obey traffic signals, and ranking on careless driving.  Each state was ranked on each criteria, with 1 being the best and 50 being the worst.  Then each state had its rankings added to give it an overall score.
Is this a bad time to tell you that I'm blogging this while driving?

FROM THE REPORT:
We’ll leave it to Kentucky to tell us which is worse: driving drunk or driving carelessly. They’ve got enough experience dealing with both to make an informed decision: they ranked 42 and 48, respectively. That means they’re the seventh worst state for fatalities…and, not coincidentally, seventh on the list. Maybe if drivers within Kentucky stopped breaking DUI laws, the statistics would be lower!

PUBLIC MEETING IN COVINGTON ON FUTURE OF DALTON ST POST OFFICE
The plant at the post office may close:
The U.S. Postal Service is actually considering the closure of 250 such facilities nationwide for a savings of three billion dollars a year. The Postal Service says a dramatic decline in mail volume is to blame for the cuts.
The union representing local postal workers says the move to close the facility will not only mean job losses-it will lead to longer shipping times because mail dropped off in Cincinnati would be shipped to either Louisville, Indianapolis or Columbus for processing.
The meeting is at 7:00PM at the NKY Convention Center. Also:
Ironically, while officials discuss cuts at the Queensgate facility - there is also a job fair at that location today. The Cincinnati Post Office needs holiday help at its distribution center on Crescentville Road in Sharonville.  The job fair happens at its Dalton Street location today from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. You must be at least 18-years-old to apply.

BREAKING (8:45PM)
|
Newport's The Southgate House has announced that it is closing:
We are sad to announce that after 30 years in continuous operation as a music venue under the ownership and operation of Ross Raleigh, the Southgate House will host its last show on New Years Eve, Dec. 31 2011.
We look forward to opening our business in a new location soon.
Thank you for the wonderful memories and your support.

The closing of the Southgate House follows the shuttering of the Mad Hatter in Covington last night.
|
That leaves the growing Madison Theater on Madison Avenue as one of the few remaining major music venues in Northern Kentucky.

NO MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET: LATONIA TREE LIGHTS GO OUT

It's not a tree-lighting ceremony without lights, but Latonia's official Christmas tree will have to do without for now. The Covington Recreation Department greeted attendees of tonight's lighting ceremony with news that the lights broke after being placed on the tree. It is possible that they were damaged by water and may be replaced later this week. In spite of the lack of lights and the cold rain, a celebration did ensue with cookies, hot chocolate, caroling by students from Holmes High School and an appearance by Santa Claus. The City gets another shot at a tree lighting when the official Christmas tree is lit up Tuesday night at 6th & Main Streets in Mainstrasse.

BREAKING: Covington Schools Superintendent Lynda Jackson just learned today that John G. Carlisle lost their two main contributors for the Christmas gift program. The schools have money to cover about a third of the students at this moment but still needs roughly $3,000 to cover the rest. "John G." is the poorest school in the district and is among the poorest in the entire state with a high percentage of homeless students. Help make the season bright for these less fortunate kids so that they know that there is good in the world. Every little bit helps, right? Checks should be made out to John G. Carlisle school and mailed or dropped off to the district office: 25 East 7th Street, Covington, KY, 41011. For more info, email janice.wilkerson@covington.kyschools.us.
Thank you to Bob Sanders and Candace Witte for bringing this issue to the attention of the community (and for their generous donations to the cause).

ISN'T THIS A SIGN OF THE TIMES...?
We hear a lot about how the federal government has placed bigger and bigger financial burdens on the states and local governments. Now there's proof. Merry Christmas:
Official Office of the Speaker
Yes, that picture is of the Capitol's official Christmas tree, as tweeted by Speaker John Boehner. But wait, there's more:
The Capitol Christmas Tree will be decorated with approximately 3,000 ornaments reflecting this year’s theme: “California Shines.”
3,000 ornaments! Wow. Sounds pricey. The Speaker, however, did make a glaring error in regards to the California Shines theme:
The ornaments have been designed by artists and crafters of all ages, and reflect the rich cultural and natural diversity of the Sunshine State.
Yeah... Florida is the Sunshine State. California's official motto is the Golden State. Understandable for a man whose preferred form of sun is the artificial kind. But that's not why this is news. It's news because of this:
Kentucky will avoid the minimal cost of hauling in an official Christmas tree, opting instead to decorate an evergreen growing on the Capitol's front lawn. Finance Cabinet spokeswoman Cindy Landham said Monday that Gov. Steve Beshear's administration had opted not to follow the traditional route of issuing a public request for a donated tree that state workers load aboard a truck to be hauled to Frankfort.
Kentucky can't even afford to a put up a donated tree! But, then again:
The move is drawing kudos from environmentalists, including leaders of the forest protection group Heartwood who said they're pleased Kentucky has opted to decorate an existing tree rather than kill one.
WKYT
|
BUT COVINGTON WILL HAVE TWO TREES!
Tonight at 6:30, the City lights up the tree at 34th & Decoursey in Latonia and tomorrow night in Mainstrasse, the City lights up the official tree on 6th Street (that event includes hot chocolate and a petting zoo for the kids!).

She went above and beyond the call of duty to support the students of SHS and our community - she was a living example of the power of giving. We know she fought a brave fight and she is irreplaceable. Please keep Tracy and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
Personal note: Tracy and I sat next to each other in French class for three years in addition to sharing time in the drama club. What an awesome, hilarious person, and what a sad, tragic loss for the Scott community.

COMMISSION MEETING CANCELED; RETREAT STILL ON SCHEDULE
Covington City Commissioner Shawn Masters tells the River City News that Tuesday's Commission meeting is canceled. However, the Mayor & Commissioners will have their retreat and caucus meeting at the Radisson Riverfront this week. The cancellation of the commission meeting follows the postponement of a disciplinary hearing involving a police officer. So, the busy week that was predicted for the Commission on Sunday has been cut by half -- but the retreat should be interesting.

NKAPC WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THANKSGIVING, SAYS TEA PARTY
The seemingly never-ending battle between the Northern Kentucky Tea Party (propped up by the NKY Homebuilders) and the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission takes a turn for the bizarre (again). The Tea Party writes on its website under the headline Thanksgiving and capitalism a wonderful thing:
Thanksgiving is an American Tradition that first occurred because of capitalism succeeded (sic) and personal property rights were established (SERIOUSLY?).  One local writer wonders if the Pilgrims could have survived, much less celebrated Thanksgiving, if they needed a petition drive and endless court proceedings to remove the shackles of central planning.
The article highlighted by the Tea Party is written by Tom Wurtz on his Poli-Ticked blog in which he somehow manages to compare the Pilgrims' original settlement at Plymouth to a socialist-style structure that was destined for failure. Thankfully Governor Bradford would overturn the "NKAPC's over-regulating strategies and bet on the free market" (SERIOUSLY):
Why aren’t our children taught the truth about Thanksgiving? The true story of Thanksgiving highlights the value of private property, capitalism, freedom, hard work and personal gain.
You can read the entire disaster at the link.

COVINGTON IS ONLY NKY RIVER CITY WITHOUT STATE FOOTBALL TITLE
It's true. But Holy Cross could change that this weekend. Ludlow (1975), Newport Central Catholic (1984, 2005, 2006, 2010), Bellevue (1977, 1979), Dayton (1966), and of course Fort Thomas Highlands (every year for the last six hundred years, or something) all have titles. Covington Catholic has six titles, but of course the Colonels technically hail from Park Hills. Holmes has never won the state football title so now the city's hopes linger on the upstart Indians in their 14th year of grid-iron competition. Good luck, kids! You've already made Covington proud...

COACH CAL IGNITES A FIRESTORM
UK Basketball Coach (and the highest paid worker employed by the state of Kentucky) John Calipari is a big fan of social media. If he's not out recruiting the next star that bolts from school just when we finally learn the player's name, Calipari's on Twitter or Facebook. Last night, Coach Cal suggested that in the near future, UK will have to eliminate ones of its annual series with Louisville, Indiana or North Carolina:
You may ask, “What do I mean about that?” Well, when you start adding two league games, which has been proposed, AND you’re playing in the Champions Classic AND you’re playing in the SEC/Big East Challenge AND you have other games that are big-time events for us to play in, you’re putting your program at risk.
What I mean by that is this program is too important to over-schedule based on the roster turnover that I believe will continue to happen. You cannot put this program at risk, not with our turnover and roster. You CANNOT over-schedule and put yourself in that position.
Coach wants you to vote on the matter.

DO WE REALLY WANT TO SUGGEST ENDING GAMES WITH LOUISVILLE?
Watch this video and understand why the UK-UL basketball rivalry is among the best in all of sports:
My vote would be to eliminate the UNC games (it would make it more meaningful should UK/UNC meet in the postseason. Indiana and Louisville are natural geographical rivals, not that that matters in college sports anymore. Boise State possibly in the Big EAST? Does the NCAA know where Idaho is?)

BITTER SWEET: ONE MUSIC VENUE CLOSES, ANOTHER GROWS

Performance during Mad Hatter's
final night, Sunday
After six and a half years as the top destination for up-and-coming local music acts, Covington's Mad Hatter was rocked one last time Sunday night. "I'm proud of what the Mad Hatter has been," said owner Frank Hulefeld. "It's become one of the best mid-size venues in the Midwest." Hulefeld, 32, is closing his own establishment to help grow another. The Madison Theater is adding a smaller, 250-seat performance space next to its current building on Madison Avenue. Madison Live!, Hulefeld said, will attract larger acts from across the country. That leaves a hole in the local scene for the young bands looking to start out in the clubs. "It's hard for young kid bands, losing a place to play," Hulefeld said. "They'll miss it the most."
|
Hulefeld, a Covington native and graduate of Covington Catholic, said that Madison Live! will have a different vibe and will attract an older crowd than the Mad Hatter. He is also looking forward to working for Madison Theater's Esther Johnson. "She believes in Covington, she puts her money where her mouth is," Hulefeld said. "People are gonna be blown away."
|
|
Though one venue closes, the expansion of the Madison Theater is a boon for Downtown Covington, a place that Hulefeld believes is an ideal destination for music fans. "It's so centrally located, (Covington) is not on the other side of town for anybody," he said.
