Performance during Mad Hatter's
final night, Sunday
After six and a half years as the top destination for up-and-coming local music acts, Covington's Mad Hatter was rocked one last time Sunday night. "I'm proud of what the Mad Hatter has been," said owner Frank Hulefeld. "It's become one of the best mid-size venues in the Midwest." Hulefeld, 32, is closing his own establishment to help grow another. The Madison Theater is adding a smaller, 250-seat performance space next to its current building on Madison Avenue. Madison Live!, Hulefeld said, will attract larger acts from across the country. That leaves a hole in the local scene for the young bands looking to start out in the clubs. "It's hard for young kid bands, losing a place to play," Hulefeld said. "They'll miss it the most."

Hulefeld, a Covington native and graduate of Covington Catholic, said that Madison Live! will have a different vibe and will attract an older crowd than the Mad Hatter. He is also looking forward to working for Madison Theater's Esther Johnson. "She believes in Covington, she puts her money where her mouth is," Hulefeld said. "People are gonna be blown away."

Though one venue closes, the expansion of the Madison Theater is a boon for Downtown Covington, a place that Hulefeld believes is an ideal destination for music fans. "It's so centrally located, (Covington) is not on the other side of town for anybody," he said.
