PRESENTS
Sunday Edition
SUNDAY 6 NOVEMBER 2011 * COVINGTON
IMPORTANT WEEK FOR FUTURE OF
DOWNTOWN COVINGTON
The latest plan to revitalize Downtown Covington & The Central Business District is front and center this coming week. The Center City Action Plan is said to be "the plan of plans", combining pieces of the nineteen previous plans since 2000 that aimed to bolster Covington's core. The CCAP is part of at least four scheduled events in which the public is encouraged to participate and learn about what's next for Covington's urban center.

DAYTIME CURFEW FOR COVINGTON KIDS PROMPTS
PUBLIC HEARING
The controversial ordinance before Covington City Commission that requires school-age kids to be in class or at home during school hours will be discussed in a public forum. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 14, at 6:30PM at City Hall. The River City News reported on October 20 that many of the calls to City Hall against the proposed daytime curfew are coming from parents that home-school their kids. Other news from the city's November e-news: the Chimney Man, a new business in South Covington is open; a profile of Pike Street's Pop Art Candy; interstate traffic issues; and more. Click the link.

LET'S CLEAR THIS UP ONCE AND FOR ALL:
OMNICARE IS NOT CREATING ANY JOBS
IN CINCINNATI. THESE JOBS ALREADY
EXIST. THEY ARE BEING MOVED FROM
COVINGTON. STOP STOP STOP STOP!
The latest misinformation did not come from Ohio Governor John Kasich's administration, but from the usually reliable Business Courier. Read about it here: Thursday Lunch

SCHEPER'S FIRST MEETING AS MAYOR IS EVENTFUL, TENSE
One week after an optimistic swearing-in ceremony, Mayor Chuck Scheper presided over his first meeting at City Hall. Two issues caused rifts on the commission: a vacant lot owned by the city to be sold to a neighbor and the hiring of an interim Arts District manager. The River City News has comprehensive coverage from Tuesday's meeting:
If the Arts District is to be done away with, why hire an interim manager for it? The answers and explanations are at the link along with details about an anti-bullying resolution, a hero police officer, the city's top transportation priorities and more.

The Arts District hire was a tense vote, but the most tense was over a small, vacant piece of land on quiet Busse Street. Why? Click the link.

The best story from City Hall last night was about Ken Shirley whose retirement was accepted after 46 years of working for Covington.

CHILDREN IN POVERTY INCREASE IN KENTON COUNTY
A new report from KY Youth Advocates shows that 6,197 children in Kenton County live below the poverty level. That's 16% and up from 12% in 2000. The new data is from 2008. Comparatively, Campbell has the same percentage (16%) while Boone has half that (8%). Median household income rose in Kenton from 2000 - 2008 from $43,000 - $52,000. Kenton's unemployment rate in 2000 was just 3.3% (Remember America before Bush?) and rose in 2009 to 9.9%. The number of children receiving supplemental nutrition assitance in Kenton County nearly doubled from 2000 - 2009 (4,611 - 8,366). The number of Kenton kids on Medicaid also nearly doubled. The entire depressing report can be found at the link (it's a PDF).
