ACCUSED KILLER: VICTIM WANTED TO DIE
The man accused of killing a woman in Urbana, Ohio and then disposing of parts of her body in South Covington says Jessica Rae Sacco asked to die:
He claims she told him that she wished she didn't have to die, but that she understood her actions. "She was pleading with me to slash her throat and slash her wrist...do something. And I told her... No.. I can't do that to you and she told me to stab her then. So I just held my hand above her stomach. She grabbed my wrist and pulled it into her stomach." Puccio also claims her last words were, "I still love you and I forgive you."

MEANWHILE... The accused killer also wants to die:
Matthew Puccio, 25, once of Hamilton, is charged with murder in the death of 21-year-old Jessica Sacco. He told the Dayton Daily News from jail on Wednesday that he plans to plead guilty and deserves death.

Awful:
Jeric Flores is charged with torture of a cat, tampering with evidence and cruelty to animals. The cat was shot out of a tree by a bow and arrow behind an apartment building off Southside Drive. The injured animal was found just a few feet away next to a fence. The tree has since been since cut down.

NEWPORT POLICE FIND KIDS, DRUGS IN HOTEL ROOM
The discovery was made in a Fort Wright hotel room, where nothing good ever happens:
Newport police took Haley into custody today, finding him in a Fort Wright motel room with his girlfriend, their two young children and other family members. They also found a large quantity of prescription pills and other drugs. "There were heroin needles in the room, pills scattered around the floor in the room."

Police believe he's the same man who robbed the Walgreens on Monmouth. "About a week ago we had a robbery at Walgreens where a male came into store, he had a toboggan on and he produced a note."

UNEMPLOYMENT APPLICATIONS AT LOWEST LEVEL IN FOUR YEARS
Slowly but surely:
Overall, about 3.35 million people were getting jobless benefits during the week ended March 24, a decrease of 16,000 from the preceding week, the department said. The four-week moving average was 3.4 million, a decrease of 24,500.

STOP PANICKING OVER BULLIES?

An alternative viewpoint:
As the parent now of two school-age boys, I also worry that my own kids will have to deal with such ugly and destructive behavior. And I welcome the common-sense antibullying strategies relayed in "Stop Bullying": Talk to your friends, your parents and your teachers. Recognize that you're not the problem. Don't be a silent witness to bullying.
But is America really in the midst of a "bullying crisis," as so many now claim? I don't see it. I also suspect that our fears about the ubiquity of bullying are just the latest in a long line of well-intentioned yet hyperbolic alarms about how awful it is to be a kid today.

KENTUCKY FANS CONTINUE TO SHOW HOW CRAZY WE ALL ARE...
One UK fan is so committed to landing a top recruit for the Wildcats next year that he is offering up his wife in exchange for prospect Nerlens Noel:
Now, of course that had a lot to do with the fact that they were playing there, but I'm always just shocked at how dedicated Kentucky fans are. One man asked me if I wanted to take his wife home with me, ha ha. I couldn't believe it. I was like, "Nah, I'm good," but that's just how insane the fans were down there. Great atmosphere.

HOTTEST TRENDS IN URBAN HOUSING
Great read for urban enthusiasts in Covington:
Number one among reasons why this trend toward more city living and walkable suburban living is the "great convergence," as Laurie Volk calls it, of the two largest generations in American history. Together the Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) and Millennials (born 1981-2000), account for more than 150 million Americans. Ben points out that a number that size is sufficiently large that even small portions within it can "have multiplier effects on housing supply and demand."

DUKE ENERGY TO LEAD CAMPAIGN FOR NEW BRENT SPENCE BRIDGE
The annual dinner for the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce was met with exciting news from Duke:
"Without a new bridge, our structure to deliver our products fails us. Our system to receive materials to build those products fails us. Simply put, our economy fails us," said Julie Janson, in her first public remarks as chair of the chamber's board of directors. "So I am dedicating myself and I ask the business community to grab the lead on this project, not for a year, not for two, but seize it and drive it until we cross the finish line."

NKY NATIVE WRITES OF MOB EXPERIENCES FOR HUFFINGTON POST
Great piece that is actually about marketing:
I grew up in northern Kentucky. My father was a professional gambler and the Newport and Covington were heavily influenced, or controlled, by the mafia.
My dad said about his bookmaking operations, "we can't advertise or television or put a sign in the window. We can't sue if someone doesn't' pay us. All we can do is hope that honorable people refer us to other honorable people."
It must have been a good system. Without advertising, he never seemed to lack for customers.

Even if it passes the Senate, Governor Beshear's gambling bill may face trouble in the House:
“I really have not made up my mind about it,” said Rep. Darryl Owens, a Louisville Democrat who chairs the House Elections and Constitutional Amendment Committee that is likely to take up the issue if comes to the House.
Owens said he hasn’t yet read the 131-word proposed measure. But he said he does have questions about specifically designating licenses only for horse race tracks.

NO LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT TO REFORM REDISTRICTING PROCESS
Shocked?
Under House Bill 310, legislative leaders would appoint 12 people to the commission who would come up with a redistricting plan. Then the General Assembly would vote up or down on that plan.
But so far, Moore has been joined in the effort by just five other lawmakers — Democratic Rep. Jim Wayne of Louisville and four Republicans, Mike Nemes and Louisville, David Osborne of Prospect, Danny Ford of Mount Vernon and Bill Farmer of Lexington.

KY HOUSE PASSES BILL TO RAISE DROPOUT AGE TO 18
The bill passed overwhelmingly, 87 - 10:
House Education Committee Chairman Carl Rollins, D-Midway, said sending a message to students about expectations is the bill’s most important goal.
Others said raising the age will not cure Kentucky’s low graduation rate but at least will provide a first step in addressing the issue.

54 MILLION AMERICANS GOT PREVENTIVE CARE BECAUSE OF HEALTH REFORM
You can call it Obamacare all you want, but it's working:
“Americans of all ages can now get the preventive services they need, like mammograms and the new Annual Wellness Visit, free of charge, as a result of the new health care law,” Secretary Sebelius said. “With more people taking advantage of these benefits, more lives can be saved, and costly, and often burdensome, diseases can be prevented or caught earlier.”
The Affordable Care Act requires many insurance plans to provide coverage without cost sharing to enrollees for a variety of preventive health services, such as colonoscopy screening for colon cancer, Pap smears and mammograms for women, well-child visits, and flu shots for all children and adults. The law also makes proven preventive services free for most people on Medicare.

Music fans that cross the river to see shows will be delighted with the new Bogart's:

MAYOR CHUCK SCHEPER'S FATHER REMEMBERED
George H. Scheper died Tuesday morning at the age of 91 as noted by his son, Covington Mayor Chuck Scheper, during that night's commission meeting. The elder Scheper had a long history of service in Covington and was also a committed family man:
“It was remarkable to me when I was growing up that he had such an important and challenging job, in terms of leadership, but he was virtually always home for dinner,” said his son, Chuck Scheper, the current mayor of Covington. “He truly was able to maintain a sense of balance between family and his business. He was very much a Christian and lived a Christian life. He was a great example, not only as a father, but as a man.”

NKY TEA PARTY SUES KENTON & CAMPBELL LIBRARIES
Is there anything these people don't hate?
The suits allege the library’s boards have not properly followed Kentucky law governing library districts in the past when increasing property tax rates.
Kenton County Public Library Executive Director Dave Schroeder said the suits are without any merit. “We’re following the law and have been for many years,” Schroeder said.
(snip)
Just for the year 2011, the Kenton County suit asks for $5.125 million in damages as part of a larger refund being sought, Voelker said. The class action lawsuit filed against the Campbell County Public Library seeking to invalidate and roll back the library’s tax rate back to 1978 levels.
Ridiculous. Read the whole thing to understand just how clueless and dangerous the NKY Tea Party is.

NATIONAL LIBERAL WEBSITE TAKES AIM AT GOVERNOR BESHEAR
Think Progress:
At the same time, the $43 million tax break Kentucky approved for a Bible-themed amusement park — which will include a 500-foot by 75-foot reproduction of Noah’s Ark — goes into effect for the first time under Beshear’s budget. In addition, the budget includes $11 million to improve a highway interchange near the park. Proponents of the park, Beshear included, have claimed it will boost tourism and create jobs, but those assumptions are based on a report done by the park’s developers.
When he's not shilling for polluters in the state, the Governor wants universities and other agencies to suffer but still found time to boost the prospects of building an amusement park dedicated to the story of Noah and the flood. SRSLY.

FT. WRIGHT MAYOR MOVES BURLINGTON BUSINESS TO COVINGTON

Granite World owner and Ft. Wright Mayor Joe Nienaber (L)
talks with Dave & Tracy Jones
The long-awaited widening of MLK Boulevard/12th Street played an important role in the landing of Covington's newest business. Granite World had been operating in Burlington but outgrew its space and when owner Joe Nienaber, also the mayor of Ft. Wright, went looking for a new building, Northern Kentucky's largest city was the perfect fit.  "The revitalization of 12th Street was a huge influence in the decision to locate in Covington, and in particular to that area of Covington," Nienaber said earlier in a release. "It is a beautiful corridor and allows convenient access to the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area."
|
At Friday night's well-attended open house in Granite World's new space at 14th & Russell Streets, Covington City Manager Larry Klein, who was previously an administrator in Ft. Wright while Nienaber was on the council, told The River City News, "They could have moved anywhere and they chose Covington." Klein is optimistic that once the MLK Boulevard project is fully complete, more businesses will see the same promise that Nienaber did. "The 12th Street Corridor was designed with a vision of increased visitors, residents and businesses to Covington, and Granite World has the potential to bring all three into our community," Klein said.
|
The new showroom is 8,000 square feet and offers customers the chance to shop for granite indoors in a climate controlled space. Another open house will be held Saturday night from 7:00 - 11:00PM.
