L&L DRY CLEANERS BUILDING DEMOLISHED
Following Sunday's devastating fire, the L&L Dry Cleaners building where the Landrum family had operated its business since 1947, was demolished. Yesterday, code enforcement officials decided it would be best to take the building down since its structural integrity had been so badly compromised. Calling the building "unstable", acting Covington Fire Chief Dan Mathew said that any investigation would be difficult because of the severity of the damage. "It's not safe enough to truly discover where the fire started and it's not worth risking a life for," Mathew said. Though Covington Police were first on the scene responding to an intrusion alarm, Mathew believes that alarm sounded because the flames had cause windows to burst. Firefighters are still working on their individual reports about the fire.

RELATED: Traffic is moving again on this stretch of Twelfth Street. Also, while taking these photos, I ran into WKRC reporter Joe Webb who was on the scene for a live shot and he told me that owner Paul "Butch" Landrum was able to salvage the business's sign and that if insurance allows for it he will reopen his business in a newly constructed building at this site. For Joe Webb's report: WKRC

NKY FAMILIES FEEL EFFECT OF HEROIN THROUGH LOSS OF LOVED ONES
Heroin is a drug that affects more than its users:
“He borrowed my car and left to go out with a friend,” Goetz said. “He said ‘I love you mom, I’ll be back later.’” But, Dietz never came back. The 30-year-old was found dead in a parking lot in his mother’s car a few days later after overdosing on heroin.
Bill Mark, director of the Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force, said that heroin accounts for 63 percent of arrests in Northern Kentucky, with the region leading the state in heroin-related arrests.

CHARGES OF RACISM AT LOUISVILLE ATTRACTION SPARK DISCUSSION
Louisville's Fourth Street Live is one of that city's highlights, but allegations of discrimination there have led activists to plan a forum:
Community activist Theresa Boyd says residents need to address this long-standing issue locally now. “This issue of racial inequality or discrimination at Fourth Street is not a new issue. It’s an issue that’s always been there and seemingly continues to be there," said Boyd.
Boyd and her activist group Connected Voices organized Tuesday’s forum. She says the purpose is to give the community a chance to voice any frustrations minorities and others may have had with Fourth Street Live.

PRINCE OF PEACE SCHOOLS SWITCHES TO ALL-MONTESSORI
The Catholic School on Pike Street is going all-in with its Montessori education efforts:
Prince of Peace began as a traditional school for grades 1-8 in 1986. It added its first Montessori classroom for children ages 6-9 in 1999, and had Montessori at all grade levels by 2005. Due to budget constraints and the success of the Montessori program, the school started to phase out the traditional side a couple of years ago.

RALLY IN COVINGTON TODAY INSPIRED BY
    TRAYVON MARTIN SHOOTING IN FLORIDA
The shooting death of a Florida teenager at the hands of a neighborhood watch leader has ignited debate across the country and now several people in Covington are organizing a rally for this afternoon:
The Covington community is invited to convene for a rally to discuss community issues and Kentucky’s Castle Doctrine, which is similar to the Florida law that has been used as a reason not to arrest, and suggested as a defense, in the case of George Zimmerman, who shot Martin in a situation that Zimmerman appeared to have started.
Confirmed guest speakers and performers include:
  • Jerome Bowles- President, Northern Kentucky NAACP
  • Ms. Bennie Doggett- President, East Side Neighborhood Association
  • Bishop Nerrick Jackson-Founder, Grace of God Ministries
  • Kris Nevels-Attorney, Nevels Law Office
  • Vibe-One-Owner, E.S.A Entertainer/Producer
The rally is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2012, at Randolph Park, 8th and Greenup Street, Covington, Kentucky 41011. It will run from 3-5:30 p.m.

IS IT FINALLY OVER IN FRANKFORT?
It appears that the special session of the Kentucky General Assembly has come to a close. Governor Beshear offers his thanks:
“I am thrilled, and Kentuckians should be as well, that the General Assembly joined with me in taking a giant step forward in addressing one of the biggest problems facing our people – prescription drug abuse. House Bill 1, passed in the special session today, gives us an aggressive, broad spectrum of policies needed to fight this problem on multiple fronts.
I’m also pleased that lawmakers passed a Transportation budget bill, needed for funding necessary projects around the state. I placed only two items in the special session call, and the legislature responded by passing both in the shortest possible time.
Even though the final version of the prescription drug bill doesn’t include every element we had hoped, it is an enormous bipartisan accomplishment, and it restores Kentucky as a leading state in innovative tactics in battling prescription drug abuse. The elements of the bill will also help prevent Kentucky from becoming a source state for prescription pills.

Northern Kentucky University's baseball team had just left for a trip to a game in Indiana when they noticed a semi-trailer's driver slumped over the wheel of his truck, which was inching along U.S. 27.
Two of the team's coaches sprang into action.
"We jumped up on the step and I beat on the window for a second and no response, then figured a brake is a brake, so we stepped on the brake got it stopped, and our athletic trainer came over to assess what was going on," said Dizzy Peyton, pitching coach.

NKY GROWTH HAD $685.5 MILLION IMPACT
According to a new economic impact study by the Cincinnati Enquirer:
“There are two takeaways. First, even in a recession, there are business opportunities, and we continue to take advantage of those business opportunities in Northern Kentucky during a recession,” said Janet Harrah, director of NKU’s Center for Economic Analysis & Development, which conducted the analysis.
“Second, we had success in a variety of industries, which is good because the more diversified your economy is, the less susceptible you are to economic downturns.”

TWO COVINGTON CONDO COMMUNITIES AMONG TOP 3 IN CINCINNATI
The Cincinnati Business Courier ranked today the most expensive condominium communities in Greater Cincinnati. The Ascent topped the list while Domaine de la Rive placed third based on the highest-priced units moved in each development:
The Ascent at Roebling’s Bridge in Covington, Ky. maintained its No. 1 spot, but was joined by last year’s No. 2 development, SouthShore Condominiums in Newport. Both had units that sold for $5.45 million each.
(snip)Domaine de la Rive, another Covington condo development, placed third with its most expensive unit going for $3.5 million.

REP. GEOFF DAVIS'S SIGNATURE LEGISLATION CAUSES TIFF IN MAGAZINE
The Economist wrote a piece on Geoff Davis's REINS Act:
Finally, one bad idea is the REINS bill. Passed by the House, it would involve Congress more heavily in rule-making. If there is a body worse than the executive agencies at this kind of thing, it is Congress.
The Economist
|
That promoted the Congressman from Kentucky's 4th District to write a letter to the editor of The Economist:
The bill’s acronym as a metaphor for the reins on a horse is fitting. The purpose of reins is not to keep a horse at a standstill, but to keep it in check; to ensure that it acts according to the intent and will of the rider. The REINS Act ensures that the people’s representatives are accountable for the laws they pass as well as the major regulatory costs that may follow.
