MAYOR CHUCK SCHEPER TO DELIVER STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS
The Mayor & unified Commission's '10-point plan' to put Covington back on track is tonight at 6:00PM at the Madison Events Center on Madison Avenue in Downtown Covington. The River City News will be there and will provide live updates throughout.
|
The mayor previewed much of what to expect tonight during a speech last week to the Covington Business Council.
|
The Cincinnati Enquirer's Mike Rutledge explores the 1999 'Scheper Report', its suggestions to save Covington money, and how some of those suggestions could be cheerleaded for again tonight by its author, the mayor:
“Redesign (health-care) benefit plan models to take advantage of trends in plan design and savings opportunities.” The report added: “There is no incentive for employees to direct their services to an ‘in network’ doctor or facility where discounts have been negotiated.” Scheper echoed this during a speech to the Covington Business Council. He also noted the city still does not require insurance co-payments of its employees. That is something the report urged be changed so employees would share the incentive for cost savings.

FILING DEADLINES FOR COVINGTON CANDIDATES IS TODAY
When the Kenton County Clerk closes up shop this afternoon, the City of Covington will have its candidates for Mayor and Commission. The River City News released the names of those candidates already filed and you can check that out here:
|
A third candidate would have to enter the Mayor's race in order to force a May primary, otherwise Commissioners Casper and Carran will not face each other until the November general election.
|
Only six candidates are known in the Commission race for four seats. The slate would need more than eight candidates to force a May primary, otherwise all the candidates advance to the November general election.
|
Check back at The River City News often for any late breaking announcements from new candidates.

GOV. BESHEAR: VOTES ARE THERE FOR GAMBLING AMENDMENT
The Democratic Governor says that he believes there are enough votes in the Republican-controlled Senate to send a gambling amendment to the voters of Kentucky:
“I think we have 23 people saying that they will vote on this issue and vote in favor of putting this on the ballot,” Beshear said. “But as we all know between the time the bill is introduced and the time that the vote is actually taken a lot of conversations go on.”
Beshear accused his vanquished rival from last year's race for Governor, Senate President David Williams, of working to stop the amendment. Read Williams's retort at the link.

SEN. THAYER WON'T REVEAL CLIENTS IN THE HORSE INDUSTRY
The race tracks of Kentucky stand to benefit the most from expanded gambling and Senator Damon Thayer (R-Georgetown), who represents South Covington is on board with the Governor's plans. But:
State Sen. Damon Thayer, who is expected to file a casino gambling bill in coming days that could bring big bucks to Kentucky’s horse industry, collected at least $208,835 in consulting fees from the industry during 2010 and part of 2011, according to court records.

BENGALS WIDE RECEIVER JEROME SIMPSON ARRAIGNED IN COVINGTON
He pleaded not guilty to trafficking marijuana:
“At no time did Simpson touch the package,” said Simpson’s attorney, Burr Travis. “He was taking a shower when the package was delivered. I think he was still in the shower when police came.”

Come on, shouldn't this play get Jerome Simpson off any criminal charges at least through next season?
Never gets old.

UK PLAYERS SHOW OFF NEW UNIFORMS
These are causing quite the stir since they are so clearly a departure from the traditional blue and white:
The platinum jerseys are more like grey, with a sharp blue checkerboard pattern running down both sides. The front looks normal. The back looks like it’s imported from Europe, with the player’s name positioned below the number. Eight other schools will be wearing the new look at some point this season.

UK FOOTBALL LANDS BROTHERS WITH DEEP BASKETBALL ROOTS
Remember basketball star Mookie Blaylock? He has two talented sons too (twins), only they prefer football. And Kentucky signed them!

The twins come by their athletic genes from both sides of their family. Their dad, of course, was a star for Billy Tubbs on the Oklahoma team that was upset in the 1988 NCAA Tournament finals by Danny Manning and Kansas. Mookie Blaylock went on to average 13.5 points and 6.7 assists in 13 NBA seasons, making the 1994 All-Star Game. While at Oklahoma, Mookie met and eventually married Janelle Karas, an all-conference volleyball player for the Sooners. The twins are the oldest of the three boys the couple had before they divorced.
