HOLY CROSS BOYS BASKETBALL WIN KENTUCKY ALL A CLASSIC
A thrilling finish in Frankfort saw Holy Cross capture the All A Classic on a 3-point shot by Jake Burger at the buzzer! The Indians entered the fourth quarter trailing by twelve to Bardstown but stormed back in miracle fashion. This title follows the school's state football championship. What a year it has been in Latonia!
|

"I got it, threw it up and luckily made it," a cool and collected Burger said after the biggest shot of his life. While Burger's desperation three touched off a loud celebration among the Holy Cross players and fans, it left Bardstown stunned and heartbroken.

CITIES MAKE CASE FOR PLANNING COMMISSION TO NKY LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS
Covington City Commissioner Sherry Carran read part of the City's resolution opposing Senator Damon Thayer's bill in Frankfort that would lower the number of signatures needed to place the dissolution of the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission on the ballot. Carran was joined by the mayors of Crescent Springs and Crestview Hills in opposing Senate Bill 62. The Home Builders Association of NKY and the NKY Tea Party also spoke on the issue, urging the NKY legislative caucus, which was holding a public forum at the Highland Heights campus, to vote to pass the bill. The HBA and tea party failed in their effort last year to place NKAPC on the ballot after it was discovered that many of the signatures collected by the HBA-funded Arizona-based for-profit company were fraudulent. "One political theme is the corruptive influence of money (in politics) and senate bill 62 is the poster child," said Dennis Harrell of Taylor Mill. "Having failed under existing laws, (HBA) now seeks to change the law. It only has its own interests in mind."

NKU'S FUTURE MAIN ISSUE AT CAUCUS
The anti-planning effort by the HBA and tea party took the passenger seat at Saturday's forum. The hot topic was the funding inequalities experienced by Northern Kentucky University where the forum was taking place.
The normally upbeat (NKU President Dr. James) Votruba was uncharacteristically blunt and somber in his remarks at a public meeting of the Northern Kentucky Legislative Caucus. But after four years of cutting expenses and finding efficiencies, he said the university has reached a tipping point that threatens to undo the gains it has made over the past decade. “We’ve run out of options to handle this kind of stuff without serious cuts to muscle and bone here,” he said.

YOU'LL LIKE COVINGTON!
That was the message from our city in the early 20th century. As Covington tries in the 21st century to bring in new businesses and residents, let's take a look at how the City tried to do that before. It's a fascinating pamphlet from the Industrial Club.

AT LEAST WE'RE NOT VILLA HILLS, PART 263
The ridiculousness continues for our posh neighbors to the west:
A clerical employee has hired a lawyer to investigate allegations of “sexual harassment, retaliation and other illegal conduct” that she says she has been subjected to through her job with the city of Villa Hills. The letter with the allegations made by Villa Hills Assistant City Clerk Kimberly Robbins was hand delivered to Villa Hills Mayor Mike Martin on Thursday.

KY LAWMAKERS RUSH TO COSPONSOR DRUG TESTING FOR WELFARE BILL
Pitiful:
Legislation that would require welfare recipients to be tested for drug use is gaining popularity among Kentucky lawmakers, more than 50 of whom have signed on as co-sponsors. It doesn't matter that the measure stands little chance of passing into law. In a legislative election year, incumbents want their names on proposals that tend to be popular with blue-collar voters, as this one is.
Not one of these legislators is courageous in the least. Cowards, all of them.

SEN. PAUL'S PAPPY SAYS AIRPORT SECURITY IS NOT GOVERNMENT ROLE
Rep. Ron Paul after his son was detained at the Nashville airport:
“It totally voids the concept of the 4th Amendment,” Paul said. “It doesn’t make us safe. It undermines our liberties.” The congressman noted he voted against the Department of Homeland Security, which he called a “bureaucratic monster.” Paul said government shouldn’t be responsible for providing security for the airlines.

(snip)Mike Tammaro earned his first win as a trainer in 1975 with Bid For Me at Laurel Race Course. His career took him to tracks across the midwestern and eastern United States and in Florida and Canada. Among major clients was Mereworth Farm, owned by the late Susan Donaldson.(snip)Tammaro trained 8,380 starters and compiled a record of 930 wins, 1,006 seconds, and 998 thirds for purse earnings of more than $17 million. Five starters had been entered under his name this year; his final starter was Dancin Skeeanno on Jan. 20 at Turfway.

UK UNIFORMS FOR PLAYERS, NOT FANS (SO GET OVER IT!)
Nice take:

If your objection to the uniform changes is that universities such as UK have basically sold their (insert throat-clearing noise) student-athletes to apparel companies such as Nike to use as living billboards, that's a philosophical argument with merit.
But for me, here's what makes the whole exercise in crass commercialism palatable. When I've been around the UK players who actually wear Nike's unconventional uniforms, they seem by and large to be stoked about getting to wear different styles and varied colors.
