UPDATE 9:47PM: Commissioner Steve Casper writes at The River City News Facebook page that the resolution opposing the federal housing program has been pulled from Tuesday's agenda. The resolution will be discussed during a caucus meeting.

COMMISSIONERS EXPRESS DISTRUST OF HOUSING DIRECTOR
At Tuesday's Covington City Commission meeting a resolution will be voted on opposing Covington's participation in the federal HUD "Moving to Work" program. At The River City News Facebook page, Commissioners Steve Frank and Shawn Masters explained their position. "Aaron Wolfe Bertling," wrote Frank. "He didn't approach us before doing an end run around us and we put our foot down. He'll now have to talk with us at the next Caucus. The whole Housing Department has been as transparent as ink."
|
"Commissioner Frank is correct," wrote Masters. "I don't think the commission is opposed to "Moving to Work", but it will be a cold day in hell before I vote to allow Wolfe-Bertling the latitude to exploit our Section 8 program."
|
"We may ultimately go to Move to Work," Frank continued, "but everything the Housing Department has done recently, like forgetting to tell us that NIP might be bankrupt to making it such that the Integral Group could ignore open bidders for the Jacob Price Housing unit and select themselves once they knew what everyone else bid.... just bad medicine. I for one am boycotting the ground breaking."
|
TUESDAY'S COMMISSION AGENDA
In addition to opposing the Move to Work program, the Commission will weigh in many more topics, including the moving of the Farmers Market from Goebel Park to Roebling Point. For the full details, click the link.

COVINGTON & NKY HELP TORNADO RECOVERY EFFORTS
|
The Covington Police Department:
Covington Police have placed a bin in the lobby of our headquarters to collect personal hygiene items, non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, bottled water, etc. to donate to the victims of the recent tornados that devastated Northern Kentucky. (NO clothing at this time, please)
Also, if you would like to give gift cards, please put them in an envelope and they may be left with a dispatcher. Gift cards to Kroger, Remke's, Walmart or fast food would be most useful. Please contact the Red Cross with any cash donations.
|
The latest from Tornado Relief NKY @ Facebook:
Update: Turfway is NOT a collection site. We simply had a need to have volunteers there this morning as they did some of the laundry (quite a bit actually thanks to their staff). Also, there is an over abundance of clothes right now that still needs to be laundered, we're waiting for those Tide trucks! I would strongly encourage all collection sites to STOP collecting clothes, unless they are new and have the tags on it, until further notice. We just cannot keep up with the donations and right now many families are still displaced and have been taking just what they need to get through a couple days. In the meantime please consider donating your clothes to other local non profits in the region who provide this service year round, their need is still great! Thanks! -Lisa Raterman

SENATOR MCCONNELL TALKS TORNADOES ON SENATE FLOOR
Our senior senator shows some emotion here:
|
Earlier today, Senators McConnell and Rand Paul co-wrote a letter to President Obama urging federal assistance in the affected areas. However, Rand Paul's father, Texas Congressman Ron Paul says the states should be on their own. WFPL

HEBRON MAN GETS ARTIFICIAL HEART AT UK HOSPITAL
Wow:
Doctors later discovered that his heart ejection fraction — a measurement that shows the amount of blood the heart can pump into the body with each beat — was less than 10 percent. Healthy people generally have heart ejection fractions between 55 and 75 percent.
Then Poe's liver began to fail.
That's when he came to the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, where he underwent the four-hour SynCardia procedure. Although his heart was removed and examined, doctors still don't know what caused Poe's heart failure.

NEWPORT'S EAST ROW HONORED BY 'THIS OLD HOUSE'
It is truly a beautiful neighborhood:
The local historic district, which is the second largest in the state, was named as one of This Old House magazine’s “Best Old House Neighborhoods” in a recent feature story that profiled 61 “old house” neighborhoods across the U.S. and Canada.
Cincinnati Enquirer/Sarah Hardee

REMEMBER: In 2009, Covington was noted by This Old House as one of the best places in the south to buy an old house:
Houses here are beautiful, solid, and cheap. The federal and state governments are trying to lure artists and small-business owners by offering substantial tax incentives to those who restore older income-producing properties. Covington is a New Urbanist's dream, with shops, groceries, parks, bike trails, and the City of Cincinnati, all within walking distance.
Read the one page article here.
TRIVIA: This Old House's first theme song on PBS was "Louisiana Fairy Tale" which was written by Covington's own Haven Gillispie. Or so Wikipedia says.
