FINALLY, A NATIONAL MUSIC ACT RECOGNIZES COVINGTON!
Ah... maybe The River City News's editorial against national music acts that play in Covington but only give shout-outs to Cincinnati, is starting to resonate.

Maybe your kids know who Big Sean is? The hip hop star tweeted Monday night to his 1.1 million followers,
"So my cincinnati show is technically in Kentucky. U know how they right next to each other... So it's at the Madison! In KY! For Cincy!"
Big Sean sent the message after a fan tweeted,
"Um Well To Be Correct For Ppl Lookin For @BigSean Tix For The Nati The Concert Is In Ky Nt The Nati Its At The Madison"
Maybe the fan read our complaint from last week when Covington was ignored by Hot Chelle Rae and other national acts performing at the Madison. They all gave shout-outs online to Cincinnati.

OOH! LET'S SHOP FOR COVINGTON ON eBAY!
Good news folks... The piece of blighted Covington property that we told you about last week is still available on eBay. So what are you waiting for? 11 days left...

But if you're not in the market for a boarded-up corner lot... let's take a look at what else is for sale from Covington on eBay:

Remember when you could actually eat at the Mike Fink?

Me neither. But the once fabulous riverboat restaurant has an old menu for sale on eBay. Someone in Dallas got their hands on this circa 1970s 4-page menu from the Mike Fink (jumbo shrimp cocktail appetizer was just $1.40!). The bidding ends early this morning (9AM-ish)so hurry... the current asking price is $28.00.

Meet me at the hotel, hotel, Holiday Inn!
A pretty cool old key from the Riverfront Holiday Inn in Covington going for the low price of $5.99 + shipping. No details on the year, but check it out and see if you can remember when hotel keys looked like this: Holiday Inn Key @ eBay

IS WILLIAM GOEBEL GOING TO WIN ANOTHER ELECTION AS A DEAD MAN?
Covington icon and slain Kentucky Governor William Goebel (assassinated in 1900) is very active lately on Twitter. Check out some of his tweets:
From 10/31:
"Coming into the home stretch. Vote Goebel 2011!"
From 6/28:
"It looks like Kentucky Republicans are learning some of my lessons from back in the day. I'll still beat them. http://bit.ly/jF0Lvp"
From 6/23:
"Bob Farmer, jerk. http://huff.to/jDrX7r I'd have never let this guy on my ticket. Goebel for Gov in 2011."
From 4/26:
"If I were governor I'd bend the rivers to my will. And will when I am governor."

And there are plenty more at his Twitter feed. Oh, and speaking of books... The new book about Goebel called "Wrath: A Novel of Kentucky" is still available for free, as the good Governor tweets:
"Use coupon code QY92P for 2 more weeks @http://www.smashwords.com to get a copy of that slanderous book about me for free."

GOOD LUCK CHUCK:
SCHEPER TAKES OVER AS MAYOR

Mayor Chuck Scheper addresses
the crowd at City Hall
CITY HALL - He's led multi-billion dollar corporations, defeated stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and chairs the local company looking to cure cancer. Chuck Scheper, 59, now adds the City of Covington to his list of tasks and has just one year to add it to his list of accomplishments. Most at City Hall Tuesday expressed more than just optimism that Scheper is the right man to replace ex-Mayor Denny Bowman. City administration and commissioners shared enthusiastic praise and high expectations for the new mayor. The River City News was the only Covington blog at City Hall for this important occasion. Here is a round-up of our coverage:

COV: NIELSEN TO MAKE QUIETEST EXIT EVER
Sure, it's the worst-kept secret in business, but it's worth noting that the Nielsen Company has yet to come out and say publicly that it plans to leave its government-subsidized office space in Covington for government-subsidized office space in Cincinnati. But a local economic-oriented organization that includes the Judges-Executive of Kenton, Campbell & Boone Counties is advertising the entire Madison Place building as being available. Even the building's owner, Corporex, hasn't done that. Also, if the building is vacant, can it really be described as "prestigious"? Click the link for the full-story:
Simple Math Implies No Hope for Retaining Nielsen, 600 Jobs

SEE ALSO: Nielsen is such a whiny, bad corporate citizen, that it is forcing Cincinnati City Council to pass emergency legislation to allow it to put its name on the the Chiquita Center. The worst part? Council is considering it. Read the entire request by Nielsen and the Cincinnati government here:

THE TEA PARTY & HOMEBUILDERS' PARTNERSHIP CONTINUES TO BACKFIRE
It seems like a lot of trouble to go through just so an industry can build lower quality, less regulated sidewalks, streets and homes. Now the agency hired by the NKY Homebuilders to collect signatures against the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission is being sued by Kenton County Attorney Garry Edmonson.
The suit filed in U.S. District Court last week claims that Andrew Chavez, his firm AZ Petition Partners and independent contractors for the firm trafficked in forged documents in order to be paid nearly $100,000 for gathering the signatures.
What. A. Distaster. A well-earned disaster.

DEVOU PARK TRAILS FULL OF GHOSTS!
...and other monsters. Today is the Devou Park Trails Back Country Bonanza, an event geared toward the athletic and families. From the website:

The trails are designed, built, and maintained by a joint partnership with the Kentucky Mountain Bike Association, (KyMBA) and the Cincinnati Off Road Alliance, (CORA) under the direction of the City of Covington.  The trails are for Hikers, Trail runners, and Off Road Cyclists.    The trails are being constructed in accordance with the International Mountain Bike Association Trail Building Standards.

This looks like an amazing event at these new trails. With that development and the proposed Riverfront Commons and the Licking Greenway project, this town could be a hub of athleticism and outdoor activities. Finally.

DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL AD TO BE FILMED IN COVINGTON
According to Carl Weiser at the Enquirer's Politics Extra, a local talent agency is soliciting actors for a campaign spot to be filmed in Covington Tuesday. According to the note, the campaign ad, which does not mention President Barack Obama, will film at a hardware store, an architect shop, and a print shop, all in Covington. Wednesday and Thursday more shooting will happen in Cincinnati.

MAD HATTER CLOSING, AS MADISON THEATER EXPANDS
The River City News reported six weeks ago that Kings Lighting & DJ on Madison Avenue was closing so that its neighbor, the Madison Theater could expand. Today, by way of the Enquirer, we learn that the Mad Hatter will close so that its owner can run the new Madison expansion. The Mad Hatter was always packed when a show was booked. Covington commercial real estate agent Chuck Eilerman notes that the Mad Hatter is expected to be used by Gateway College.
(BTW, The River City News's parent company Dean Miuccio Productions bought up much of Kings Lighting's inventory and used it for the TV show Cincinnality.)

MADISON PLACE FEATURED AS 'VACANT' AND...'PRESTIGIOUS'?
The Nielsen Company has not confirmed publicly that it is leaving its taxpayer-subsidized office space in Covington for taxpayer-subsidized office space in Cincinnati, but NKY Tri-ED lists Madison Place and all 290,000 square feet inside as available. Corporex, the company that built and owns the building, only lists half that available (presumably, the half NOT occupied by Nielsen) which means the whole thing would be vacant. Yet, NKY Tri-ED describes the address as "prestigious"? For the whole story, click the link to our earlier report.

COURT: KENTUCKY FREE TO RELY ON 'ALMIGHTY GOD' FOR SECURITY
In another episode of This-Did-Not-Come-From-The-Onion, a KY Court of Appeals ruled against a group of atheists that wanted to change the state law that required Kentuckians to thank the almighty God for keeping us safe:
State law requires the Office of Homeland Security to publicize God's benevolent protective powers in its official reports and on a plaque posted outside the entrance to the state Emergency Operations Center in Frankfort. State Rep. Tom Riner, D-Louisville, a Southern Baptist minister, placed the "Almighty God" language into the law establishing the office without much notice at the time.

ENTIRE MADISON PLACE OFFICE BUILDING FEATURED AS "VACANT"
Madison Place
Photo via
Is this how Covingtonians are supposed to be told that The Nielsen Company, which still has not publicly stated that it plans to move to Cincinnati, is in fact leaving and taking its six-hundred employees with it? The Northern Kentucky Economic Development Corporation (Tri-Ed) is promoting Madison Place as this month's featured property in its Thrive NKY monthly newsletter. It says there is 290,516 square feet of space availabe. That's not what Corporex, the property's owner, lists on its website as available. Corporex offers six available floors with square footage that adds up to only 143,427. But this Business Courier report from a year ago that first hinted at a Nielsen move says the company occupies 148,000 square feet in Madison Place. 143,247 + 148,000 = 291,427. Not exact, but certainly telling. Take a look at how Tri-ED promotes the building:

OMNICARE LAUGHS AT COVINGTON, PART 3
In spite of needing taxpayer assistance to pay its rent at RiverCenter and also to pay its rent at its new digs in Cincinnati, Omnicare still has plenty of cash to buy up its nearest competitor. Louisville-based Pharmerica has now agreed to share acquisition related information with the Covington Cincinnati-based Omnicare:
“While the PharMerica board continues to believe that Omnicare’s $15-per-share offer undervalues the company, the company is engaging in this analytical process to enhance its understanding of the antitrust risk related to Omnicare’s proposed combination,” according to a news release.
Oh, Pharmerica. If you really want to know what it means to be undervalued by Omnicare, give your old friend Covington a call. Omnicare just posted a $28 million profit while operating out of its government-subsidized offices in Covington but they feel like they could make even more money when they relocate to Cincinnati starting in December, costing our city nearly a million bucks and who knows how many jobs (in addition to the 500 or so that are leaving RiverCenter). It seems like a lot of fuss is being made over a company that paid nearly a $100,000,000 (that's one-hundred million dollars) to settlle allegations of Medicare fraud. Ever wonder what would happen to you if you committed $100 million in fraud against elderly people? I'm not sure either... but I bet tax breaks wouldn't be involved.
