COLLEGE SPORTS COME AT A COST TO KENTUCKY TAXPAYERS
As March Madness concludes tonight with UK taking on Kansas in the championship game, the Lexington paper explains how expensive college sports programs are for taxpayers:
Spending on athletics has remained strong despite nearly a decade of cutbacks in state funding, which have pushed much more of the financial burden of attending college onto students. Since 2006, state lawmakers have cut spending on public higher education by $105 million, and an additional decrease of $62 million is expected over the next two years.
With that financial picture, one state legislator thinks Kentucky universities should be looking in an obvious place to cut spending.
"The various universities and their boards need to contemplate that which is the most important challenge ahead of them, and they have to put athletics in their proper perspective," said Rep. Arnold Simpson, D-Covington, who chairs the House budget subcommittee on higher education.
Simpson met with presidents from all eight public universities. For more on that, click the link.

The problem is that Rep. Davis never approved the use of his speech about Massie, the Lewis County Judge-Executive, and has said that he would not endorse in the GOP primary -- and Davis's wife is ticked:
She responded to commenters on a post made by state Rep. Adam Koenig, R-Erlanger:“Regarding the Massie ad that ran last night, Geoff’s remarks from the House floor were taken out of context and Mr. Massie did not even tell my husband about the ad prior to running it. Members of Congress are not allowed to use C-span footage for political ads. Geoff did not endorse Massie & in fact was not going to endorse in this race. I do not want someone who behaves in this type of poor behavior representing me in Congress.”

CLASSMATE OF COVINGTON SUICIDE VICTIM TAKES ACTION
Covington's Kathy Groob profiles a young woman hoping to combat bullying:
Taylor is among the 11 students that have been chosen for the Northern Kentucky Youth Council and she is serving as the council’s co-chair. It was the group’s anti-bullying stance that attracted Taylor to the council and that is currently putting together an action plan to combat bullying. Taylor’s friend, a 13-year-old classmate, killed himself last October. She coped with the sudden loss of her friend and her outrage that bullying lead to his untimely death.

CHINESE DELEGATION IN KENTUCKY FOR HORSE SPORTS DISCUSSION
A new international equestrian event, The Friendship Cup, would alternate between Kentucky and China:

The Chinese group has signed a letter of intent with Sai Ma Sports, an American group, to work on ways to fill the "enormous latent demand for equine sports in China," according to a release from Sai Ma. In addition to the Friendship Cup, the group will negotiate an agreement for the U.S. Equestrian Federation, or USEF, to help the Chinese Equestrian Association jump-start its horse sports to quickly bring them up to international standards.

SEE ALSO: Something amazing happened at the Louisiana Derby (a prep race for the Kentucky Derby) Sunday:

In one of the most surprising results in recent memory for a Kentucky Derby prep, 109-1 shot Hero of Order stunned the packed house at the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots by holding off favored Mark Valeski. Hero of Order, who is not even nominated to the Triple Crown, won by a half-length for owner/trainer Gennadi Dorochenko, a 53-year-old former jockey from Russia.
The horse was bought for $3,000 at a Keeneland auction and just won a million dollar race. Now a late effort to get the horse in the Derby is underway. Click the link. Amazing.
